Recipient of 2024 CALA Outstanding Library Leadership Award in Memory of Dr. Margaret Chang Fung

Dear CALA Members:

The CALA Best Service Subcommittee is pleased to announce that Dr. Huanwen Cheng, life member of CALA and Professor of the School of Information Management, Dean of the National Culture Heritage and Culture Development, and former University Librarian at Sun Yat-sen University , was selected as the recipient of the 2023-2024 CALA Outstanding Library Leadership Award in Memory of Dr. Margaret Chang Fung!

Dr. Cheng has been consistently demonstrated outstanding leadership and exemplary achievement in library and information services at the national and/or international level. He has been instrumental in in developing academic libraries in China as he has served in many important leadership roles at the national level, including his service on the Steering Committee of the Academic Library and Information Service, the Ministry of Education of China, and Vice Chairman of the Committee, and Chairman of the Steering Committee for the Academic Library and Information Service, the Department of Education of Guangdong Province, China. He also played a major role in developing a strong network among libraries in Hong Kong, Macau, and mainland China - the South China Region.

As a national leader in the library profession, Professor Cheng also served as a leader in promoting and advocating for public library development in China. He shaped the library regulations, which required legislation support from the provincial government, and secured major funding for the public libraries in Guangdong Province, China.
