Food, Fun and Fundraising for Diversity - CALA's Continued Support to the Spectrum Scholarship Program

CALA has been a strong support of the ALA’s Spectrum Scholarship program.  CALA has joined force in Spectrum Presidential Initiative, led by the American Library Association’s President, Immediate Past President, and President Elect and chaired by ALA Past President Dr. Betty J. Turock, in a special campaign to raise $1 million for the Spectrum Scholarship Program.  In 2010, CALA Board approved to donate $6,500. In recognition of this gift, the ALA Spectrum Scholarship Program has named Christopher Kyauk as the 2010 CALA Spectrum Scholar.   To continue CALA’s strong support to diversity, the 2011- 2012 CALA Presidential Initiative Task Force called members at chapter and national levels to participate in “Food, Fun and Fundraising for Diversity” to support the Spectrum Scholarship Program.

CALA Presidential Initiative Task Force chair Liana Zhou, together with Maria Fung and Sha Li Zhang as national co-coordinators of this initiative activity, have been successful in working with chapters on this CALA initiative. In November, the Southern California chapter was the first to respond with a $100 contribution in support of this meaningful effort. On December 9, the Northeast chapter kicked off a fun filled holiday party in New York City, raffled off beautiful holiday presents at a luncheon, and donated $300 to the “Food, Fun and Fundraising for Diversity” fundraising effort.  In addition, individual donations from CALA members have been received.   We are looking forward to more member participation.  All donations, large or small, will add up to the big contribution to this meaningful diversity initiative. CALA thrives in the promotion of diversity in library profession, and your support to this meaningful endeavor will, in turn, make CALA stronger. To find out how to participate, please visit CALA Presidential Initiative webpage at http://cala-web.org/node/1404. For more information, please contact us.  Thank you.

Symposium on Dr. Hwa-Wei Lee's Thoughts on Librarianship

Report on Symposium on Dr. Hwa-Wei Lee's Thoughts on  Librarianship

李华伟博士图书馆学术思想研讨会

Dear CALA Members:

I am writing to report on the Symposium on Dr. Hwa-Wei Lee's Thoughts on Librarianship, 李华伟博士图书馆学术思想研讨会, held on November 17, 2011 at the Shenzhen Library in Shenzhen, China, co-sponsored by the Zhenzhen Library, Zhongshan University Library, Guangdong Public Library and the Chinese American Librarians Association.  The Symposium was a great success. Over 70 people from mainland China, Macau, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the United States including Dr. Lee's friends and families, participated in the Symposium. CALA was well represented by 11 CALA members who attended the event. The conference organizers were gracious enough to have provided most of us the opportunity to speak.

CALA also presented Dr. Lee with a plaque of distinction to celebrate his accomplishments.  It was certainly a moment of joy and celebration for all, particularly for Dr. Lee.

There was much excitement at the Symposium. As we all know, Dr. Lee has become a legendary figure in the library profession, particularly among Chinese and Chinese American librarians. The symposium served as an excellent platform where his accomplishments, including his contribution to the library scholarship, his leadership in the profession, his love for the field and his care for all who met him, were all captured in this one day event. This event also served as a platform where all of us who followed him along have been fortunately given the direction for the future development for ourselves and for our profession. All present felt blessed by knowing him as a mentor, friend, colleague, and more importantly a leader.

Several CALA members submitted papers but were not able to attend the Symposium, and their papers were either presented by designated CALA members or included in the special publication for the program.  Dr. Lee expressed his appreciation to all.

The one day program ended with much admiration and best wishes for Dr. Lee, celebrating his 80th birthday at the same time. These moments will be long remembered through the wonderful photos taken by those who attended the event. Please see photos through the following links (we are still collecting photos from participants and will have them uploaded to a central site so that they are together for easy viewing):

Congratulations again and best wishes to Dr. Lee!

CALA Joined IFLA

Dear CALA Colleagues and Friends,

I am very pleased to announce that CALA has joined the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) as a national association member. The 2015 Strategic Plan calls for CALA to become a leader in global reach initiatives (www.cala-web.org/node/150). To accomplish this goal, I have listed CALA membership in IFLA as one of the Presidential Initiatives for this year. During the ALA Annual Conference, held in June 2011 in New Orleans, CALA Executive Committee approved a proposal from former CALA presidents Liana Zhou and Mengxiong Liu that CALA join IFLA as a national association member.  CALA Treasurer, Songqian Lu, did a wonderful job in completing the transaction for the application process.

I want to particularly thank Dr. Sha Li Zhang, former CALA president 2008-2009, for her important role in making CALA membership in IFLA a reality. Her extensive involvement and leadership experience in library organizations, at national and international levels, have been invaluable in helping achieve the strategic objectives of CALA in international outreach and collaboration.

IFLA is the global voice of library and information profession. It provides information specialists throughout the world with a forum for exchanging ideas and promoting international cooperation, research, and development in all fields of library activity and information services. By joining IFLA as a national association member, CALA and its members are able to enjoy the benefits, such as voting rights in IFLA, selected standing committee representations, IFLA conference discount, and more. It expands CALA's vision, increases CALA's visibility in the library communities across the world, and provides broader international networking and leadership development opportunities for CALA members.

I will give charges to the International Relations Committee to develop guidelines of nominating CALA members to serve on IFLA standing committees.  Please stay tuned for further information.
