The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (www.umassd.edu) invites applications and nominations for the role of Dean of Library Services. The Dean will plan and develop library and information resource programs, systems, services, and infrastructure that support the University's growing research agenda and its plans to transition its Carnegie classification from Masters/L to Doctoral/Research. S/he will be responsible for developing a critical university resource, building a collegial and collaborative working environment that is responsive to the needs of both students and faculty, and guiding a $40 million library renovation project from the conclusion of design development through a planned two-year construction. The Dean reports to the Provost and will serve as a senior member of the Provost's management team.
Located in the heart of the picturesque south coast of Massachusetts, only a short drive from Cape Cod, Providence, and Boston, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth is ranked among the top northern public universities by U.S. News and World Report. As one of the five campuses of the University of Massachusetts system, UMass Dartmouth offers a broad range of baccalaureate and graduate degrees vital to the economic, social, and cultural well being of its region. It has an enrollment of over 9,000 students in 38 undergraduate and 33 graduate programs, including 7 at the Ph.D. level.
The Dean of Library Services will bring an understanding of and ability to articulate a well-founded vision for a 21st century research university library and evidence of substantial leadership and achievement within a higher education library. The Dean will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the general public. An MLS from an ALA accredited institution is required, along with five years of progressively responsible higher education library administrative experience. A doctorate or second graduate degree is preferred, as is senior administrative experience at an ARL library.
