Each year the Chinese American Librarians Association confers the CALA Distinguished Service Award to honor and recognize an individual who has distinguished himself/ herself for providing outstanding service the profession of librarianship. On behalf of the CALA Awards Committee, I am pleased to announce that the 2005 CALA Distinguished Service Award goes to Ms. Susana Juh-mei Liu.

In her forty-year career, Ms. Liu not only excelled in her various positions in academic librarianship, but also has been recognized for a long commitment to serving the local community as well as library professional organizations. She played an instrumental role in the 1983 merger of Chinese American Librarians Association and the Chinese Librarian Association in California to form a unified voice for Chinese American librarians in the United States. In addition to holding a number of offices in CALA, Ms. Liu has also actively contributed a great deal of her time and energy in professional organizations and committees such as California Library Association. Her tireless efforts in promoting higher education for the Asian community won her several awards and honors by the State of California. As an academic librarian, Ms. Liu has achieved a long record of scholarship and research activities.

Ms. Susana Liu has established herself as a role model for librarians as a whole and a community leader. It is a great honor to present the CALA Distinguished Service Award to such a dedicated colleague.
