Brief Description

The Katherine W. Dumke Fine Arts and Architecture Library, housed in the J. Willard Marriott Library at the University of Utah, is seeking an innovative and creative librarian to work in an exciting and recently renovated learning environment of free and open inquiry combined with a commitment to excellence in service.  Reporting to the Head of Fine Arts, responsibilities of the Fine Arts Librarian will include specialized research assistance, instruction, collection development for print and digital resources, outreach, and digital projects in the areas of the visual arts, art history, architecture, music, ballet, modern dance, film and theatre.  Opportunities exist for building collaborations across the library, campus, and community in support of Fine Arts and interdisciplinary work.  This individual will help users blend visual and textual resources in support of a new University of Utah visual, information and technology literacy initiative.  This program is being developed to embed teaching of these literacies into the undergraduate curriculum to prepare students for life and work in the 21st century. 

Required qualifications

  • ALA-accredited MLS/MLIS by time of hire or equivalent academic credential.
  • Academic background of Art, Art History or related discipline, demonstrated through undergraduate or advanced degree, coursework, and/or work experience.
  • Demonstrated aptitude for, or experience in, successful user-centered public service:
    • Teaching and training, including classroom instruction and the creation of lesson plans and learning objects.
    • Research assistance in person, by email, and synchronous chat service.
  • Comfortable using both PC and Macintosh platforms.
  • Proficiency with basic productivity software, in particular Microsoft Word.
  • Experience using image design tools and software (Photoshop, Fireworks, Illustrator, Paint, etc.).
  • Demonstrated aptitude for, or experience in, successful project management.
  • Demonstrated aptitude for, or experience in, learning and using new types of technology and software.
  • Demonstrated aptitude for, or experience in, managing or leading the work of others.
  • Demonstrated effective writing and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals, groups, and on a team in a collaborative, diverse environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to be flexible and positive in a changing work environment.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to prioritize work.
  • Ability to meet University's requirements for promotion and continuing appointment (tenure equivalency).
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check, as required by Utah state law (http://www.regulations.utah.edu/humanResources/5-130.html).

Preferred qualifications

  • Advanced degree or knowledge in Modern or Contemporary Art, Graphic Design, Animation, Film Studies, Architecture, Urban Planning, or Arts Education.
  • Reading comprehension in one or more Western European or Asian languages.
  • Experience using website design software (Vignette, Dreamweaver, Blackboard, HTML, CSS, etc).
  • Experience with multimedia and studio software (FinalCut Pro, Logic Pro, iLife suite, etc).
  • Experience with interactive media (synchronous and asynchronous) such as blogs, wikis, Second Life, podcasts, vodcasts, iTunesU.
  • Knowledge of and experience with art conservation, storage, and exhibition installation.
  • Knowledge of and experience with copyright and intellectual property issues, as they pertain to the fine arts.

Salary

$44,000 minimum

Excellent benefits calculated at approximately 35% of salary including TIAA-CREF, medical, dental, generous paid sick and vacation accrual, sabbaticals, professional development time.

Marriott Library is an ARL library with holding of nearly 3 million volumes, 32,000 journals in electronic and print formats, and a considerable number of other networked electronic resources. The University, with a student population of 29,000, is situated on a 1,500 acre campus in Salt Lake City. The library is very near completion of a large-scale renovation which includes a state- of-the-art Knowledge Commons and a center to create multimedia digital content. Teaching facilities, used by campus and library instructors, include 18 classrooms, labs and seminar rooms and a 250 seat auditorium.

Salt Lake has a population of over 1 million and offers residents a wide variety of cultural, entertainment and recreational activities, all located along the Wasatch Mountain Range.
