About the job
Duties and Responsibilities:
Under the general supervision of the unit head and/or the dean of libraries, the BMS librarian provides expertise and leadership in the acquisition and cataloging of monographs (including other formats such as media scores and documents). The position includes professional oversight of the processes and staff that support the acquisition and cataloging of monographs, including management of the Approval Plan; copy cataloging, work flows, project design and implementation. Works collaboratively with other BMS Librarians and has shared responsibility for making decisions or recommendations pertaining to the online catalog databases as a whole (authority control, support contracts, record standards, relationship and communication with affiliate libraries) and for planning and communicating changes in BMS processes or policy that affect the access to materials and activities of the library. The BMS Librarian is responsible for original cataloging of monographs in a variety of formats, languages, and subject areas, using a variety of classification schemes, Library of Congress Subject Headings, and/or other established Thesauri.
- ALA Accredited Master's degree in Library and Information Science or equivalent
- Experience or coursework related to cataloging
- Project management skills including ability to organize work flows for efficient and effective use of staff time to accomplish a stated task within agreed upon constraints of time, budget.
- Demonstrated leadership and management skills and abilities that include, but are not limited to, supervising staff and managing funds.
- Ability to build a budget and request resources as needed given the priorities of the department overall.
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication
- Ability to plan and set priorities
- Ability to meet the requirements of publishing, research, and service required to achieve tenure.
Minimum Salary: $41,658/yr (corrected)
Desired Start Date: September 1, 2009 (negotiable)
