Annual report

List significant activities the committee has done since last report:

We are happy to report that CALA, after a successful debut as a new national library association member of IFLA at the IFLA World Library and Information Congress (WLIC) 2012, held in Helsinki, Finland in August 2012, CALA has continued to make its appearance felt in IFLA by participating in its nomination and election process and other affairs. Appointed by CALA President as liaisons to IFLA, our main duties include: to assist communications between CALA and IFLA; to help with logistics on IFLA nominations this year; to advise officers, representing CALA, on their participation in IFLA.  In our last report submitted in January 2013, we created a to-do list for CALA officers who will represent CALA in the IFLA. Listed below is what we have accomplished after our last report:

  • Facilitated the meeting of potential IFLA Presidential candidate Donna Scheeder and governing board candidate Loida Garcia-Febo at CALA Board Meeting in Seattle, in January 2013 for CALA to demonstrate its active participation and engagement in governing affairs in IFLA.  Happy to note that CALA supported both candidates and both won the IFLA election for their perspective positions.
  • Another CALA member, Clara Chu, was also elected to Chair the IFLA’s Division IV, Support of the Profession. The Division includes six IFLA standing section committees and five interest groups.
  • Assisted with IFLA membership renewal for CALA and we would like to thank CALA treasurer Maria Fung for timely process of payment of IFLA membership due.
  • Upon approval of CALA nominees for the IFLA Standing Section Committees, helped in sending out the nomination packages to IFLA.
  • At the request from ALA, CALA will help host a reception for the U.S. delegation to IFLA, 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. (19:00 – 20:00), on Saturday, August 17, 2013, during the IFLA WLIC 2013 in Singapore.  Shali Zhang and Min Chou are appointed by President Lee to work on the task.  It is noted that CALA has gained a noticeable position among U.S. caucuses in IFLA.

We would once again remind CALA officer to attend National Associations Meeting during the IFLA Congress and to cast voting on behalf of CALA at the General Assembly at WLIC.  We would like to take this opportunity to remind future CALA presidents the importance of being present in person to participate in voting in IFLA.  Upon arrival to the IFLA Congress, CALA officer must report to IFLA Secretariat first to pick up the voting documents.  Should the voting officer not be able to attend the IFLA Congress, CALA must nominate a proxy to vote on his/her behalf.

Respectfully submitted,

Mi n Chou and Shali Zhang
