I. Board activities and spring event

In the past six months, the board members have discussed a couple of events to be held in spring; however, the events could not work out due to speakers’ schedule change and various reasons. We have decided to attend and support the LACUNY (Library Association of the City University of New York) International Relations Roundtable on the education of the Chinese for librarianship since our board member Michael Huang will be one of speakers and some CALA-NE members involved with this event organization and attendance. Speakers will address the educational requirements for librarians in China and discuss their own education both prior to and after beginning their professional careers. International studies have given several of the speakers a cross-cultural perspective. They encourage librarians to come and share their own experiences of education for librarianship, particularly if part of their education was outside of the United States or Canada.

The chair Charlene Chou and vice-chair Minglu Wang will attend this event to participate in the roundtable discussion and to discuss future collaboration with the LACUNY. More detailed information is as follows:

Time: Thursday, June 20, 2013, 10am-12pm
Venue: Bernard Baruch College Newman Library (Room 415), 151 East 25th Street

Special guests include:

Sheau-yueh (Janey) Chao, William and Anita Newman Library, Baruch College, CUNY
Tang (Tony) Cheng, Shanghai Normal University Library*
Michael Bailou Huang, Health Science Library, SUNY Stony Brook
Zuwang Shen, Library, Bronx Community College, CUNY

II. Chapter Poster for 2013 CALA ALA Annual Program
The vice-chair Minglu has been in charge and finished our Chapter poster design for the CALA ALA Annual program. She has done an excellent job in collecting the photos of past Chapter events and members and designed the poster artistically. Some members have sent her great photos and comments regarding the history of NE Chapter.

III. 2013 LSC Delegation in New York City in June
The chair Charlene Chou has been working with our members, Maria Fung and Lina Ding to plan the LSC delegation’s visits. The LSC delegation will have arrived New York City on June 25th. They are scheduled to visit the BPL on June 26th morning, NYPL/QBPL in afternoon, and to visit NYPL/QBPL on June 27th morning. They will leave for Chicago for ALA Annual conference in the afternoon of June 27th.

IV. RDA training at the National Central Library in Taiwan
Through the invitation of the National Central Library in Taiwan and Sally Tseng’s coordination, three CALA members, Sally Tseng, Charlene Chou from Columbia University and Wen-ying Lu from University of Colorado at Boulder, taught a RDA Workshop at the National Central Library in Taiwan from May 21st to May 23rd, 2013. There are more than 140 librarians attended this workshop with a great discussion on this new international cataloging standard. The CALA President Esther Lee, Vice-president Carol Gee and former Chair of NE Chapter, Janey Chao also attended the workshop. Esther Lee and Sally Tseng presented the CALA’s commemorative plaque to congratulate the 80th anniversary of NCL in the opening session of this workshop. In addition to the workshop, Dr. Tseng Shu-hsien, Director General of National Central Library and President of Library Association of the Republic of China (Taiwan), organized a seminar on May 22nd evening for both the CALA and Library Association of the Republic of China (Taiwan) members to discuss for further collaboration in future.
