List significant activities the committee has done since last report:

1. Seminar with delegates from the Public Culture Department, PRC:

CALA Northeast Chapter members had a seminar with delegates from the Public Culture Department, PRC on July 19th, 2012 at the NYPL Mid-Manhattan Library. During the seminar, Mr. Yu’s delegates inquired about the role of American Library Association in librarians’ professional development and different libraries’ administration and operation mechanism in the US. CALA/NE members shared about their personal experiences as ALA and CALA members, and their knowledge about the profession in both public and academic libraries. In the end, Mr. Yu’s delegates welcomed CALA members to contribute to China’s library journals on similar topics to continue the conversation in the future. All attendants enjoyed learning new facts about the library systems from two different cultures. Thanks to Hung-Yun Chang and Esther Lee for the quick organization and arrangement of this meaningful event.

2. CALA Northeast Chapter Board meeting:

CALA Northeast Chapter Board held the first board meeting on July 27th, 2012 at the NYPL Mid-Manhattan Library.  Several improtant decisions were made and the 2012-2013 program was determined.  The idea of symposium was decided to postpone in the future.  The chair will organize the library visits and the idea is to visit art museum library in Manhattan. The CALA-Northeast Chapter needs to present a poster to be included at CALA’s 40th anniversary celebration at the ALA Annual Conference in 2013. This poster should highlight all of the chapter’s recent achievements. The deadline to submit to CALA is in October.

3. Visiting Art Museums on 12/7/2012:

Our Chapter members visited the Frick Museum and Library and the Metropolitan Museum of Art Library in the afternoon of December 7th, 2012.  Both Chief Librarians greeted us.  We're impressed by the expertise and high technology of the Digtial Lab and rich collections at the Frick as well as the fasinating East Asian art collections at the Met.  We're especially grateful for the generosity of Met's Chief Librarian for providing reception for our members and Min Xu, Associate Museum Librarian, for giving the tour and making all arrangements.

List committee recommendations, if any, to the Board:

We've been discussing if a symposim will be held in our Chapter.  Due to various concerns, this project has been postponed.  If the CALA Board has mentors to provide this kind of advice and suggestions for holding a symposium at the Chapter level, it would be very helpful for the Chapter board members to hold more influential events in our community.
