LIST SIGNIFICANT ACTIVITIES THE COMMITTEE HAS DONE SINCE LAST REPORT:
After the last CALA/ALA Midwinter Meeting in Dallas, January 2012, the 2012 Program Planning Committee received a positive answer for speaking at our upcoming Annual Conference Program from the fourth outstanding library leader who has published widely, served in many capacities, and received numerous awards. This leader is Dr. Ingrid Parent, the President of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions, and the University Librarian at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. That completed our roster of four distinguished speakers, which included also Dr. Camila Alire, Dr. Sha Li Zhang, and Mr. Jim Rettig.
The theme of the Program is DIVERSE VOICES, ENRICHING COMMUNITIES. It is in tune with ALA’s current President Molly Raphael’s theme of Empowering Voices, Transforming Communities. The CALA Program will be held on Sunday, June 24, 2012, 1:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.at the Anaheim Convention Center, Room 201C (800 West Katella Avenue, Anaheim, CA 92802). We hope you will all come and enjoy this exciting and inspiring Program. Win Shih of our Local Arrangement Committee has kindly offered to bring in his laptop and projector and set up the room for PowerPoint presentations.
Thanks to the effort of our President Min Chou and our Executive Haipeng Li, we have four co-sponsors for the program. They are Sage Publications ($500.00), Emerald Inc. ($400.00), EBSCO Publishing ($250.00), and JCLC. Each co-sponsor’s representative will make a brief presentation after the speakers’ speeches, followed by a Question and Answer period, and finally, the drawing of a free kindle and a free kindle fire.
Each of the four speakers will be awarded a certificate of appreciation and a token honorarium.
Invitations to the Awards Banquet that evening were sent out by our President and Executive Director to our speakers and co-sponsors. They have graciously accepted the invitations.
With phone calls and more e-mails, Congresswoman Judy Chu’s District Scheduler Lindsay Plake notified us in May 2012 that Dr. Chu could not participate in the Program. Dr. Chu’s schedule is very full, and she may be needed in Washington, D.C. at that time.
Attached to the report are the following documents: the program flyer, program schedule, the speakers’ biographical sketches with photos, and four certificates of appreciation (one for each speaker). These materials (except the certificates) will be distributed to all attendees as handouts.
