In January 2012, the CALA International Relations Committee (IRC) sent out a call to CALA List to solicit for presenters for the CALA 21st Century Librarian Seminar Series: 2012 Forum on China-US Library Practice, which will take place July 5-9, 2012 at Yunnan University of Nationalities, Kunming, Yunnan Province, China. The sponsors for the event are Yunnan Library Commission of Higher Education, Yunnan University of Nationalities, and the Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA). The theme of the seminar is library construction and development in multicultural contexts. After a rigorous review from a strong pool of applicants, the IRC selected four members. They are: Xiaoli Li (Shields Library, University of California, Davis), who was also appointed Team Leader, Sheau-Hwang F. Chang (Clement C.
Maxwell Library, Bridgewater State University, Bridgewater, MA), Jianye He (C.V. Starr East Asian Library, University of California, Berkeley), and Angela Yang (Alameda County Library, CA). Keith Michael Fiels, Executive Director of the American Library Association was also invited to join in the team. We wish the team a great success in Kunming, China!
The International Conference on Leadership and Innovative Management in Academic Libraries in the Age of New Technology was held from April 25-27,
2012 in Tongji University, Shanghai, China. The meeting was co-organized by Tongji University and CALA. In November 2011, the call for presenters was translated from Chinese to English and distributed to major mailing lists such as CALA List and IFLA-L. The Call was also published in Chinese
Librarianship: an International Electronic Journal (issue No. 32, December 1, 2011). By February 2012, the IRC received a total of 24 proposals from seven countries including Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, and the United States. After a careful and rigorous review and approval by the Conference Committee, the following authors and proposals were accepted for presentation at the meeting:

The International Relations Committee took an active role in preparation and logistics of the conference, such as translating all the conference calls and announcements from Chinese to English and publicizing them in major international mailing lists, translating short biographies of keynote speakers, invited speakers, and Directors Summit guests from English to Chinese and vice versa, communicating between Tongji University and speakers to facilitate their travel needs, and assisting with translating during question and answer sessions.
The Chair of IRC was in contact with Mr. Xuyan Chen, Senior Coordinator of International Relations, Shanghai Library and secured a discounted registration rate for CALA members to attend the 6th Shanghai International Library Forum to be held in Shanghai Library, China, July 17-19, 2012.
The IRC has been in contact with Ms. Yue Wu, International Cooperation Officer, the Library Society of China (LSC) regarding major library conferences in China. The call for participation was sent to CALA List for LSC Annual Conference to be held in Dongguan, Guangdong on Nov 20-24, 2012.
