List significant activities the committee has done since last report:
The chapter successfully held its 2012 CALA Southeast Chapter annual meeting online on May 4, 2012. The program theme was “The Challenge of Change: Professional Development for Chinese American Librarians”. Three speakers made excellent presentations:
(1) “What’s Inside the Box?: Managing Academic Library Public Services Department.” Presented by Hanrong Wang, Acting Head of Public Services, Law/Technology Librarian at Jacksonville State University.
(2) “Shaping a New Generation of LIS Professionals in the 21st Century.” Presented by LiLi Li, E-Information Services Librarian at Georgia Southern University.
(3) “Diversify Skills.” Presented by Ying Zhang, Acquisitions Librarian at the University of Central Florida.
After the presentations and subsequent discussions, Luo Zhou, Chinese Studies librarian at Duke University, reported about Duke’s plans for and programs in China. Nine members from eight academic libraries attended the online meeting and shared professional experiences and ideas relating to the development of librarianship.
To respond to the 2011-12 CALA Presidential Initiative, which supports the ALA Spectrum Scholar Scholarship Fundraising Project, members of the chapter actively participated in the “Food, Fun and Fundraising for Diversity” activity. The chapter has made a total of $245 contribution to the meaningful cause, while Dr. Sha Li Zhang donated $150!
A Nominating and Election Committee has been formed to secure qualified candidates for the chapter membership to vote for the following positions:
(1) Vice President/President-Elect (2012-2013)
(2) Membership Committee Chair (2012-2014)
Candidate solicitation has begun and the call for nominations and self-nominations was sent out to all chapter members via email in April.
Publications and Presentations
Dr. Hwa-Wei Lee, former Chief of Asian Division, Library of Congress and the Dean of Libraries Emeritus, Ohio University, has written a two-volume book titled “Collected Works of Hwa-Wei Lee” and the book is published by Sun Yat-sen University Press, Guangzhou, China. Another two books about Dr. Lee are: (1) 书籍殿堂的智者: 杰出美籍华裔图书馆学家李华伟 (The Sage in the Cathedral of Books: The Distinguished Chinese American Library Professional Dr. Hwa-Wei Lee).杨阳 著,桂林: 广西师范大学出版社. (2) “李华伟博士图书馆学术思想研讨会专辑” 公共图书馆 (Public Library Journal) 深圳图书馆, 深圳市情报学会, 公共图书馆研究院.
Lili Li, Associate Professor, E-Information Services Librarian at Georgia Southern University, made a presentation, “Emerging Technologies for Academic Library Information Services in the Digital Age,” at the International Conference on Leadership and Innovative Management in Academic Libraries in the Age of New Technology, Tongji University, Shanghai, China, April 25-27, 2012.
Dr. Sha Li Zhang, Assistant Dean for Collections and Technical Services at University of North Carolina at Greensboro, has the following publications, poster session, and presentations:

Dr. Wenxian Zhang, Professor, Head of Archives & Special Collections at Olin Library, Rollins College, has recently made a professional presentation at the annual meeting of the Society of Florida Archivists held in Sarasota during May 2-4, 2012. Based on his learning experience from the Library of Congress' DPOE initiative, Dr. Zhang delivered a three-hour seminar on digital preservation to a group of archivists and librarians from Florida universities, colleges, state agencies, school systems and historical societies. His session was well received. As people are facing the same challenges nowadays, many feel the workshop is relevant and timely, and recommended steps/procedures are useful and practical in their long-term digital preservation efforts.
