IS THIS AN INTERIM OR ANNUAL REPORT? _x_ Interim __Annual

LIST SIGNIFICANT ACTIVITIES THE COMMITTEE HAS DONE SINCE LAST REPORT:

Since the last CALA/ALA Annual Meeting in June 2011, the 2012 Program Planning Committee has received positive answers from three outstanding library leaders who are much sought after speakers and have published widely, served in many capacities, and received numerous awards.  They are:

  1. Dr. Camila Alire, ALA President, 2009/2010, and the Dean Emerita at the University of New Mexico and Colorado State University.  Her speaking title is Personal Reflections on What Makes a Leader Tick.
  2. Mr. Jim Rettig, ALA President, 2008/2009, and the Library Director at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.  His topic is Happenstance and Opportunities.
  3. Sha Li Zhang, CALA President, 2008/2009, and Assistant Dean for Collections and Technical Services, University of North Carolina, Greensboro.  Her speaking title is Recruiting Future Librarians with Culturally Diverse Backgrounds.

We have received their biographical sketches, photos, speaking titles and abstracts.  The theme of CALA’s 2012 program is “Diverse Voices, Enriching Communities”, in tune with our ALA President Molly Raphael’s theme of “Empowering Voices, Transforming Communities.”  The date of CALA’s program is Sunday, June 24, 2012, 1:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. in Anaheim, California.

We are still waiting for answers from two other potential speakers:

  1. Dr. Judy May Chu, our Congresswoman.
  2. Ingrid Parent, the President of the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA), and the University Librarian of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada.

Presentation invitations were also sent to the following, but they were unable to attend our program:

  1. Will Manley, the author of the humorous Commentary/Will’s World in the monthly “American Libraries.”
  2. Lisa See, the author of such best-selling books as the Snow flower and the Secret Fan, Shanghai Girls and Dreams of Joy.
  3. Yan Xiangdong, the General-Secretary of the Library Society of China, who came to our Annual Program last year for the first time, and left us a very good impression of his ability and work.

Meantime, the Committee will follow up on responses from the two pending speakers, create program flyers, find sponsors or donors, and attend to other details of the program.

LIST COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATIONS, IF ANY, TO THE BOARD:
