Is this an interim or annual report? Interim report
List significant activities the committee has done since last report:
In October 2011, the Scholarship Committee has done the review of the documents and web pages relating to scholarship application. We have updated:
- application form
- application reference form
- application announcement
- application guideline
As the guideline instructed, we sought the approval of all the files from CALA President after we completed the review.
The Scholarship Committee received verification from CALA President of the fund availability for each scholarship before making the announcement. We received confirmation of fund availability for the following scholarships:
CALA Scholarship of Library and Information Science and Sheila Suen Lai Scholarship. So far we have not received confirmation of fund availability for the C.C. Seetoo Conference Travel Scholarship yet.
November, the Committee has adopted and updated the excel list of email address of all ALA accredited Library and Information programs compiled by the previous Co-Chair of CALA Scholarship Committee Shuhua Liu.
Then we emailed to all these programs the announcement of the two scholarships - CALA Scholarship of Library and Information Science and Sheila Suen Lai Scholarship - that are currently available for application.
Later the announcement was also posted on CALA listserv to catch more attention.
December, due to CALA President Min Chou ‘s suggestion and the request of Chair of Mentorship Committee Hong Miao, Scholarship Committee shared the excel list of email address of all ALA accredited Library and Information programs with the Mentorship Committee so that the list may be used in future for recruiting potential mentees.
List committee recommendations, if any, to the Board:
After Scholarship Committee announced the two CALA scholarships, one question regarding the eligibility for application was received from a graduate student at the Information School of University of Washington which grants the degree of MSIM (master of science in information management), not MLIS.
Since the application guideline has no language restricting the name of the final degree which indicates that any full time student in an ALA accredited Master’s or Doctoral program should be eligible to apply. After consulting CALA President and Executive Director, we were approved to allow the student to apply.
Since the current guideline caused confusion, and as many may have recognized that recent years there are quite some programs have dropped the word Library in the name of the degree and school name (MSIM, iSchool), Scholarship Committee would like to recommend to modify the language of the scholarships application guideline like below:
Original language at several places in the scholarships application guideline reads like this:
This scholarship awards $_____ annually to a full time student at an ALA-accredited library school in North America.
Proposed new language:
This scholarship awards $_____ annually to any full time student in an ALA-Accredited Master's or Doctoral program in Library and Information Studies.
The Committee would like to recommend CALA Board discuss and make a decision about this change.
