Chapter Significant Activities
New Officer Election
The Southeast Chapter held nomination and online election for two chapter officer positions. Luo Zhou, Chinese Studies Librarian at Duke University, was elected as Vice President (2011-2012), and Hong Ma, Information Systems Librarian at University of Miami, as Treasurer (2011-2013).

Annual Program Survey
The chapter annual program planning committee developed and conducted a survey among members to gather opinions about the format of the annual program (i.e., online or on site), topics of interest, dates of program, and favorite place for on-site meeting. Results will be used to plan the annual program.

Help Distribute Chinese Books
Per request of Chengzhi Wang, Chinese Bibliographer at Columbia University, the chapter helped distribute a Chinese book about rural children with AIDs. The promotion aims to raise awareness on Chinese children at risk and social problems in China.

Member Achievements
Publications and Presentations
Dr. Hwa-Wei Lee participated in the event held on 11/14 by Sun Yat-sen University for the official announcement of “王肖珠纪念奖学金” established by Dr. Lee to honor and in memory of Ms. Phyllis C. Wang, who was the library director of 岭南大学图书馆 in Guangzhou before 1949. The scholarship, four to be awarded this year, is for graduate students studying library and information science at Sun Yat-sen University.

Dr. Lee also attended the “李华伟图书馆学术思想研讨会” held on 11/17 in Shenzhen organized by the Public Library Research Institute of China, Shenzhen Library, Sun Yat-sen University Library, Guangdong Provincial Zhongshan Library. CALA is also a co-sponsor of the Conference. Two separately published biographies of Hwa-Wei Lee and a two-volume <Collected Works of Hwa-Wei Lee" will be officially launched at the conference.

Lili, Li, Associate Professor/E-Information Services Librarian at Georgia Southern University made a presentation, “Information Visualization for Library Instruction in Digital Age,” at the Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy 2011, which was held in Savannah, GA on September 23-24, 2011.

Dr. Sha Li Zhang’s selected publications include:

“Ten Libraries, One goal: Recruiting Future Librarians with Diverse Backgrounds through a Partnership Project in North Carolina,” at the World Library and Information Congress (WLIC): 77th IFLA General Conference and Assembly were held successfully in San Juan, Puerto Rico, August 13 – 18, 2011.

“Recruiting Future Librarians with Diverse Backgrounds: Progress Report on a Collaborative Project in North Carolina,” at the 2011 Information, Diversity Engagement, Access, and Libraries (iDEAL) Summit, University of North Carolina at Greensboro, November 2011.

Dr. Wenxian Zhang, Head of Archives & Special Collections at Olin Library, Rollins College, has published an essay titled “Bridging Cultures” in the Summer 2011 issue of Forum Magazine from the Florida Humanities Council, which documented his journey from Henan Province and the Cultural Revolution in China to America, fatherhood, and librarianship in the sunshine state. In addition, he participated in the third Consultation Forum of the Western Returned Scholars Association & Chinese Overseas-Educated Scholars Association held in Beijing in August 2011, and spoke briefly on the global resource sharing and open access policy for scholarly publications.
Luo Zhou recently participated in a conference, China-US Academic Library Forum on Area Studies, and presented on the topic “Digitization, Re-publication and Copy right” (数字化,再出版,知识产权管理) in Xiamen (10/12-14).
Li Zhang presented a poster titled Dissertation Committees as a Window into Interdisciplinary Research at the Mississippi Library Association annual conference in Jackson, October 19.
