First Quarterly Report

Narrative: Please report your major activities including accomplishments, challenges, barriers, and lessons learned from the reporting period, December 11, 2009 to February 19, 2010.

I. Project Update

1.    What did you accomplish during this reporting period (December 1, 2009 through February 19, 2010)?

  1.  Worked with CALA President, Xudong Jin, to announce the project to the CALA community and recruit participating libraries.
  2. Formed a National Advisory Team (NAT) and Local Implementation Team  (LIT) to monitor the progress of the project.
  3. Attended Family Literacy Focus Diversity Council at ALA Midwinter in Boston.
  4. Established project guidelines for the participating libraries.
  5.  A website has been set up for the project:http://daidai.cala-web.org
  6. Received Approval from ALA Family Literacy Focus Project Director, Mary Jo Venetis to allow CALA Members/Librarians to recruit individual family in their community to participate in the project.
  7. Obtained matching fund of up to $1,500 from CALA; $500 for each participating library.
  8.  We are able to recruit one library for the project.  Below is the name of the library and contact person:

2.    Were there any barriers to implementing your project?  If so, what were they?

i.    There were questions regarding intellectual properties and these questions had been clarified by ALA FLF.
ii.    The lack of response from libraries.
iii.    Lack of willingness to participate due to constraint of resources in individual libraries.
iv.    CALA membership is an academic library based community; therefore, it is extremely difficult to locate public librarians to assist in the recruitment.
v.    Recruitment for participating libraries was sent out during holiday seasons.  The recruitment period was extended by two weeks.
vi.    The budgetary constraint and the level of details of the project offer little attraction to participating libraries.

3.    Did you readjust any of your activities or strategies?  If so, how? Yes, we did.

i.    Contacted individual CALA Members.
ii.    Contacted librarians in the highly Chinese populated areas.
iii.    Sent out additional email to various listservs to call for participation and contacted local chapter presidents to assist with the recruitment.
iv.    Obtain approval to include CALA members to recruit interested families.
v.    Extend application deadline past holiday season to allow more libraries to respond.
vi.    CALA President himself showed great effort and support by contacting potential libraries for recruitment.

4.    What lessons did you learn in the first reporting period?

i.    The recruit effort was time consuming and with little result.  We needed to adjust our strategy (see above).

5.    What will you do differently in the next reporting period?

i.    We will be working with participating libraries to implement the project.
ii.    NAT will work closely with LIT to implement the project.

6.    Please list your planned activities for the next reporting period.

i.    Actively searching for participating libraries.
ii.    Recruiting more CALA members to help seek participating libraries or Chinese families.
iii.    Having a more completed website set up for participants.
