LIST SIGNIFICANT ACTIVITIES THE COMMITTEE HAS DONE SINCE LAST REPORT:

On May 31st 2009, CALA-Greater
Mid-Atlantic Chapter (GMAC) co-sponsored with the Tea for Soul Society a spring
event. We invited Lihua Yu, a well-known overseas writer who is currently
residing in the Washington,
D.C. area to give us a talk on
her overseas writing and living. The event was held in Rockville Public Library
in Maryland.

The event had a big turnout. Around seventy people,
including some CALA members around the metro area attended the talk. In her more
than one hour speech, Ms. Yu talked about her writing and life that cover more
than half a century. She recalled her experience when she just came to the U.S., when
discrimination was almost everywhere. Today, she said, despite the fact that
the discrimination against the minorities in American society has improved a
lot, we, as overseas Chinese still feel puzzled when it comes to culture and
social identities. She challenged the audience to think about why we haven't
had any Obama among Chinese. In her closing remarks, she said even the most
talented writer can only see problems and raise them. Answers to those questions
that overseas Chinese have are not in books. They rely on our everyday
endeavors to figure out.

Immediately following the
program was the GMAC annual membership meeting. At the meeting, the new Board
was elected. The list of Board members is as follows:

YE, President, Greater Mid-Atlantic Chapter
