(2020313) Associate Director, Technical Services - Yale University

Associate Director, Technical Services - 60525BR

Yale University offers exciting opportunities for achievement and growth in New Haven, Connecticut. Conveniently located between Boston and New York, New Haven is the creative capital of Connecticut with cultural resources that include three major museums, a critically-acclaimed repertory theater, state-of-the-art concert hall, and world-renowned schools of Architecture, Art, Drama, and Music.

General Purpose:  The Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library at Yale University seeks a collaborative and forward-thinking leader for the position of Associate Director for Technical Services. The Beinecke Library is Yale’s principal repository for literary archives, early manuscripts, and rare materials. Its robust collections are known and heavily used by Yale faculty and students as well as scholars from around the world to create new scholarship. In the last 10 years, the library has grown dramatically to a staff of 110 with almost half working in Technical Services units. The Beinecke Library has a robust program of acquisitions, annually adding, on average, 12,000 books, 1,000 linear feet of archival material, and more than 700 discrete manuscript items, primarily through the support of endowments. Technical Services Department is central to the Library’s efforts to provide access to the Library’s collections, whether onsite or virtually through online discovery systems and its digital library.

Reporting to the Director of the Beinecke Library, the Associate Director (AD) provides vision, leadership, and strategic direction for all aspects of accessioning, cataloging, archival processing, digital collections, and metadata services for the Beinecke Library. Cross unit and department collaboration is an increasing area of emphasis for the Technical Services department as new areas of synergy and efficiency are explored with other University Library and cultural heritage organizations. The AD oversees all technical services activities with a strong focus on enabling and enhancing discovery of Yale’s extraordinary collections by scholarly communities. The AD oversees a department of 5 units with over 50 staff.

With a clear understanding of both the opportunities and challenges inherent in the rapidly changing landscape of both special collections librarianship and library collection discovery and access, the AD is responsible for aligning the technical services department with the present and future collection and discovery needs of the Library’s diverse users. The AD fosters and facilitates collaboration with departments throughout the Library to support teaching, learning and research at Yale. The AD is responsible for maintaining a strong understanding of technical services throughout the rest of the Library and, where appropriate, the University, to ensure broad recognition of the connections between technical services and the projects and initiatives of the Library. This position will be assigned a rank of Librarian 4 to 5 based on a combination of professional experience and accomplishments.
