Dear CALA Colleagues and Friends,

I am very pleased to announce that CALA has joined the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) as a national association member. The 2015 Strategic Plan calls for CALA to become a leader in global reach initiatives ( To accomplish this goal, I have listed CALA membership in IFLA as one of the Presidential Initiatives for this year. During the ALA Annual Conference, held in June 2011 in New Orleans, CALA Executive Committee approved a proposal from former CALA presidents Liana Zhou and Mengxiong Liu that CALA join IFLA as a national association member.  CALA Treasurer, Songqian Lu, did a wonderful job in completing the transaction for the application process.

I want to particularly thank Dr. Sha Li Zhang, former CALA president 2008-2009, for her important role in making CALA membership in IFLA a reality. Her extensive involvement and leadership experience in library organizations, at national and international levels, have been invaluable in helping achieve the strategic objectives of CALA in international outreach and collaboration.

IFLA is the global voice of library and information profession. It provides information specialists throughout the world with a forum for exchanging ideas and promoting international cooperation, research, and development in all fields of library activity and information services. By joining IFLA as a national association member, CALA and its members are able to enjoy the benefits, such as voting rights in IFLA, selected standing committee representations, IFLA conference discount, and more. It expands CALA's vision, increases CALA's visibility in the library communities across the world, and provides broader international networking and leadership development opportunities for CALA members.

I will give charges to the International Relations Committee to develop guidelines of nominating CALA members to serve on IFLA standing committees.  Please stay tuned for further information.
