It is devastating to see the aftermath of the tornado in Joplin, Missouri that claimed 116 lives, America's deadliest in 60 years. Haiying Qian, a CALA member from the area, informed us that five (5) of the eight (8) public librarians who lost their homes are part-time employees. One of them is a single mom, injured but having no medical insurance coverage. The twister has destroyed the Joplin High School Media Center (click to see the movie and photos

Efforts of recovery have been begun. To help the libraries of the area, the Missouri State Library has offered a special grant of $42,000 to Joplin Public Library to replace damaged or lost books and purchase new books for landscaping, home construction tips and green energy. More funds, however, are needed.

In response, a CALA Task Force on Fundraising for the relief efforts has been set up. It will follow the Guideline for CALA's Fundraising and Donations Due to Major Disasters. As CALA is a not-for-profit national association, donations are tax deductible. The entire amount of the CALA relief fund will be donated to librarians or libraries affected by the catastrophe in Joplin, Missouri. We believe that you will give Joplin librarians the same support as you did to the disaster-stricken people in Sichuan, Japan, and Taiwan.

Please kindly send your checks, payable to the Chinese American Librarians Association, with "Joplin Donation" at the memo line, and send it to:
