Strategic Plan

Force
Vision Statement CALA (Chinese American Librarians Association), in
collaboration with other library organizations, is a leading librarians'
organization which advances diversity and equality of library services to the
library communities worldwide through the excellence of this organization and
its members.
Mission Statement CALA enhances communications and discussions of the
shared professional concerns among its members, and with members of other
library professional organizations; promotes Sino-American librarianship and
library services; provides its members collaborative opportunities with other
library organizations of similar or allied interest.
Goal 1. Strive for Organizational
Excellence
Action areas:
Enhance CALA organizational structure to maximize
its efficiency.

Continue collaborative Activities with ALA ethnic
caucuses, e.g. AILA, APALA, BCALA, REFORMA, etc.
Responsibilities
assigned to: Executive Committee, Public Relations/ Fundraising Committee, Membership
Committee.

Continue working with the ALA Office for Diversity,
and other ALA committees on issues that have important implications to CALA.
Responsibilities

Work with AALL, MLA, PLA, SLA, and other
associations on issues that have important implications to CALA.

Work with International organizations or
library professional organizations from other countries on issues that have
important implications to CALA. Responsibilities assigned to: Executive Committee,

Continue exploring and applying
technology-driven options to conduct CALA businesses, e.g., online
membership renewal, online payments, online election, virtual conferences,
virtual board meetings, etc.

Continue and conduct regular fundraising
activities to support CALA programs and services.

Enhance marketing and public relations to
project a much positive image of CALA activities and accomplishments to major
library media in U.S. and abroad.

Conduct training for CALA officers as well as
members who are interested or involved in committee work both at the national
and chapter level. These training sessions should cover topics such as CALA's
constitution and bylaws, leadership training, how to conduct presentations,
etc.

CALA president sends press releases regularly
to major library media outlets.

In light of upcoming 40th CALA anniversary
(2013), CALA Board or CALA President establishes CALA 40th Anniversary Task
Force or Ad Hoc Committee (possible consideration for special edition of CALA
Newsletter or Occasional Papers, or annual CALA Programming to make the
significant milestone of CALA history.)

Goal 2. Become a Leader in Global Reach
Initiatives
Action areas:

Develop a formal structure to coordinate the
current and future training programs in China, based on existing or past models
such as the CALA 21st Century Librarian Seminar Series, Think Globally, Act Globally,
and other newly developed programs.
Responsibilities assigned to: Executive Committee, International
Relations Committee, Chapters.

Encourage participation in the annual
conferences hosted by Library Society of China or other library organizations
in China, i.e., increase the number of delegation, speakers, papers, and work
sessions at these conferences.

Assist CALA members in developing collaborative
library programs between their libraries and libraries in Asia and Pacific Rim
countries.
Responsibilities assigned to: Executive Committee,
International Relations Committee.

Provide information and contacts to U.S.
libraries interested in collaborative or exchange programs with libraries in
Asia and Pacific Rim countries.
Responsibilities assigned to: International Relations
Committee.

Enhance ties among CALA, ALA IRC, IRRT, and
ALA divisions' IRCs in collaborative activities between libraries in the U.S
and in Asia and Pacific Rim countries.

Goal 3. Enhance Services to CALA
Membership
Action areas:

Develop a plan to enhance services to CALA
members; to recruit student members,
librarians, and library workers, and to retain current
membership.
Responsibilities assigned to: Membership Committee,
Public Relations/Fundraising Committee.

Conduct regular surveys to seek input and
feedback from CALA members on their needs.
Responsibilities assigned to: Membership Committee.

Encourage CALA members to participate in the
association's governance.

Public Relations/Fundraising Committee., Election Ad Hoc Committee, Nominating
Committee, Mentoring Committee.

Promote the awareness of the CALA
constitution and bylaws and rules and procedures to all CALA members.

Enhance communication among CALA members,
chapters, and the Board.

Goal 4. Provide Educational
Opportunities
Action areas:

Encourage CALA members to publish on CALA
sponsored publications, such as Journal of Library and Information Science,
CALA Occasional Papers Series, CALA Newsletter, and other CALA occasional
monographic publications.
Responsibilities assigned to: Publications Committee,
Chapters.

Encourage current/newly graduated LIS
students or new librarians to sign up for the CALA mentoring program with
experienced CALA members as mentors.
Responsibilities assigned to: Mentorship Program
Committee, Chapters.

Invite outstanding CALA members to
speak/present in the CALA annual conferences and chapter conferences.
Responsibilities assigned to: Program Planning Committees,
Chapters.

Provide funding support for CALA members to
present papers at professional conferences, conduct LIS research projects, participate
in training and workshops, and serve on offices of library associations.
Responsibilities assigned to: Scholarship Committee,
Publications Committee, Public Relations/ Fundraising Committee, Travel Grants
Committee, and The Sally C. Tseng Professional Development Grant Committee.

Develop a friendly/healthy environment to
encourage scholarly communications,
collaboration opportunities on research, as well as
career development among CALA members.

Goal 5. Advocate for Users of Chinese
Heritage, Chinese Cultures, and Chinese Language.
Action areas:

Act as a driving force to provide library
services to Users of Chinese heritage or users interested in Chinese cultures
and heritage in the communities of the United States, through establishing
branch libraries, acquiring Chinese material and cataloging Chinese language
material.
Responsibilities assigned to: Executive Committee, Public
Relations/ Fundraising Committee.

Provide advocacy training to CALA members and
encourage new initiatives.

Provide resources and expertise to Chinese
area studies in academic and research libraries.

Develop advocacy materials and promote
library services to Chinese-speaking communities, i.e., branch libraries with
new immigrants.

Relations /Fundraising Committee.

Collaborate with major Chinese language
material book fairs, such as Hong Kong Book Fair, to provide a platform to U.S.
librarians in acquiring Chinese language materials.

establishes new committees or task forces to institutionalize CALA initiatives
and activities, such as Emerging Leaders Review and Advisory Committee, CALA

CALA Board approves an annual review process
for the 2015 Strategic Plan, around 2012-2013.

CALA Board establishes new 2020 Strategic
Plan Committee in year 2015.
