The American Library Association’s Publishing Department seeks a Managing Editor for the ALA Digital Reference imprint.

The Managing Editor leads the content and software development functions in addition to participating in the product concepting, marketing, and customer support.

The content development responsibilities include ensuring that content created by external and internal authoring partners adheres to our product guidelines and is copyedited, tagged, formatted, proofed, and posted live to the digital products.

Software development responsibilities include the following: writing project description documents (functional specifications and RFPs); planning and organizing software testing to ensure adherence to functional specifications; reviewing development vendor contracts, collecting and categorizing user feedback and testing results into bugs to be fixed or product enhancements; communicating bugs and approved enhancements to software developers.

The Managing Editor will participate in relevant member communities and will function as the primary point of contact for our authoring partners, copy editors, taggers, proofreaders, graphic designers, and software development vendors as well as the project manager for our product launches, tracking all schedules and timelines.

Requirements: 3-5 years related experience; in a member based association, a definite plus. Bachelor’s degree. Exceptional communication skills including technical writing and editing and strong organizational and planning skills with outstanding attention to detail. Applicants should have a good working knowledge of text-tagging technologies and tools (XML, DTD, Schema), in addition to experience with digital content management and delivery concepts (Drupal, Joomla, etc.) and social media technologies. A familiarity with digital reference works in the library community, particularly bibliographic databases is a plus.

Starting salary range from the high 40s; negotiable based on experience and qualifications. ALA has an excellent benefit package that includes medical, dental, generous paid vacation and a retirement annuity.
