Dear CALA members and friends:
With the cold winter behind us, we hope that you are
starting feeling warm as spring comes. The CALA board members, committees,
taskforces, and chapters have been busy at work to carry out many important
tasks and projects for 2008-2009. We
would like to share some of them with you in this edition of the CALA Updates.
CALA Board and Executive Committee meetings:
The Board meeting at the ALA Midwinter Meeting in January
2009 in Denver went very well. The Board
approved four board meeting minutes, including the meetings in January 12, 2008 in Philadelphia, June 28,
2008 in Anaheim, June 30, 2008 in Anaheim, and 2008-2009 Board Special Online
Meeting (fall 2008). Thanks for everybody's efforts, we were able to have many action
items discussed and voted at the meeting:

Journal of Library & Information
Science (JLIS) English Editorial Board for a three-year term starting
from July 2009 recommended by the CALA JLIS English Editorial Board.
Reduction of the entry lines on the CALA Membership Directory recommended
by the Membership Committee. The recommended entry lines on the
directory are: English name, Chinese name, institution name, work phone number,
and e-mail address for each CALA member entry.
Approved: The definition of the required fields in the membership
database recommended by Membership Committee.
CALA Occasional Papers Series
(OPS) Editorial Statement and Editorial Guidelines recommended by the Publications
the amended recommendation: Exploration of the possibility of and a plan to switch
to a new web and listserv hosting plan, before the current plan expires on
April 29, 2009. The original
recommendation was from the Web Committee.

of the CALA 21st Century Librarian Seminar Project Taskforce and the
International Relations Committee to assume responsibilities to support the
UIUC-CALA IMLS Grant Project as specified.

Board held a special online meeting (February 11 - 27, 2009) and approved the amended
recommendation of the CALA Conference Travel Grant
Guidelines. The original recommendation

The Executive Committee held a special online meeting (March 9 -
13, 2009) and approved the selection of a new hosting vendor for the CALA web
and listserv, recommended by the Web Committee.
Management System Taskforce (February to September2009) was appointed. The taskforce will research, investigate, and
implement a full-featured membership management system to manage the online
CALA Membership Directory. The taskforce
members are: Songqian Lu (Co-chair), Bin Zhang (Co-chair), Heather Huibin Cai, Elaine Dong, Shuyong Jiang,
Shixing Wen, Daniel Xiao, and Weiling Liu.
Election Ad Hoc Committee was appointed to carry out the CALA 2009 Election.
The ad hoc committee members are: Sally C. Tseng (Chair), Bin Zhang, and Vincci
Conference Travel Grant Ad Hoc Committee (March 2009 - June 2010) was
appointed. The committee members are: Mengxiong Liu, Maria Fung, Wenxian Zhang, and Liana
The Membership Committee, led by Songqian Lu and Elaine
Dong, Co-chairs, has worked very hard this year to help with the membership
renewal. Most recently, Elaine Dong and
Songqian Lu, Co-chairs of the committee, sent out a reminder mailing letter to
those who have not renewed their membership. The 2009 CALA Election is fast
approaching. Only those who renew their 2009
membership prior March 30, 2009 will
be eligible to participate in the Election. Please share the information with
your CALA colleagues to remind their renewals.
