CALA Updates, October 2008

Dear CALA members, colleagues, and friends:

Two outstanding CALA members, Shu-hua Liu and Anna Xiong, were selected by the ALA 2009 Emerging Leaders Program recently. Both Shu-hua and Anna will participate in the Program during the ALA Midwinter Meeting to be held in Denver, Colorado in January 2009. Shu-hua and Anna also selected to evaluate and assess the CALA 21st Century Librarian Seminar Series as their program project. For more information about the ALA Program, please click at

Sally C. Tseng Professional Development Grant Committee, led by Lian Ruan, the committee chair, is busy to update the committee's web pages to include updated information and forms for this grant. CALA Board will hold its Meeting II for 2008-2009, at 7:00 - 9:00 p.m., on Saturday, January 24, during the ALA Midwinter Meeting in Denver, Colorado, January 23 – 28, 2009. The location is to be announced. According to the ALA open meeting policy, the conference attendees should be able to attend and observe many meetings during the Midwinter Meeting. If you plan to attend the ALA Midwinter Meeting, please mark your calendar to come to the CALA Board meeting. It will be an excellent opportunity to learn about the association, to meet with the CALA officers, and to catch up with the important issues and discussions relevant to CALA. 2009 ALA candidates for president-elect are Kenton L. Oliver, Executive Director, Stark County District Library, in Canton, Ohio, and Roberta A. Stevens, Outreach Projects and Partnerships Officer, Library of Congress, in Washington, D.C. As always, both candidates will be invited to the CALA Board meeting during the ALA Midwinter Meeting in January 2009. The Board members will be able to ask them the questions and their positions on important issues pertinent to the library profession in general and to the Chinese American librarians in specific. It will also be your opportunity to meet the candidates at the CALA Board meeting.

Camila Alire, American Library Association (ALA) president-elect, is encouraging members to volunteer for appointment and/or reappointment to the 2009-2010 ALA and Council committees. Although the deadline for submitting a volunteer form is December 5, 2008, Alire and the selection committees have already begun reviewing completed volunteer forms.
