Position: Cataloging/Metadata Specialist/Librarian

Offers the opportunity to work in both technical services, cataloging a wide range of formats, and in public services, working directly with students and faculty in the Music Library. As Wellesley's senior cataloger, is the primary cataloger for special formats and foreign-language materials; original and complex copy cataloging for music (scores and sound recordings), audiovisual materials, rare books, artists' books, electronic resources, and digitized images. Serves as a resource on complex cataloging and metadata, and on configuration of the Library’s catalog. Performs name and subject authority work, subject analysis, and Library of Congress classification. Provides leadership in creating and managing metadata for Wellesley's digital assets, including those that are part of institutional digital initiatives such as the creation of a future institutional repository. Based in the Music Library, participates in supervision of circulation services; oversees the management and delivery of music course reserves, both paper-based and electronic; recruits, trains, and supervises student circulation assistants; provides music reference assistance and first-line technical support for software, equipment and hardware in the Music Library.


ALA-accredited M.S. in Library or Information Science, or significant graduate-level coursework toward an MLS, or equivalent education and experience (subject expertise combined with library experience). Undergraduate or advanced degree in music, or equivalent education and experience. Three to five years experience in cataloging in an academic or music environment; extensive knowledge of cataloging standards and practice. Experience with Innovative Interfaces Inc. preferred but not required. Ability to work with a variety of languages for bibliographic description. Demonstrated interest in public service; excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
