Dear CALA Members and Friends,
We are very pleased to announce that Min Chou, a librarian at the New Jersey City University Library and the immediate Past President of the Chinese American Librarians Association, is the recipient of the 2013 CALA Distinguished Service Award.
Below is a biographical sketch of Min:
Min Chou has worked as a professional librarian at the New Jersey City University Library for 22 years. In her capacity, she has been able to effectively advocate the needs of her library users and the library’s integral role in achieving the university’s mission. Actively engaging in her professional career, Min was elected and appointed to more than 16 university committees and task forces. She has been recognized by the New Jersey City University through career development awards and various grants for her striving for excellence in librarianship, scholarly achievements, and dedicated service to the community.
For a long time, Min has been heavily involved in serving the Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA). During her CALA presidency, Min focused on international outreach, fundraising for the ALA’s Spectrum Scholarship Program, mentoring for CALA Emerging Leaders’ Prelude to the Celebration of CALA’s 40th Anniversary’s 40/40 Project, and engaging CALA leadership in using new technologies to conduct CALA meetings. She envisioned the need for CALA to be more engaged with the global library community, and was an instrumental leader in getting CALA to become a member of International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA). Min’s vision and accomplishments received much attention throughout the library community. Thanks to her devotion and efforts, CALA’s profile in the library profession has been elevated.
As the chair of CALA Publications Committee, Min led the Committee in completing a series of initiatives and projects including CALA Fact Sheet, Spotlight on CALA Members, CALA Occasional Paper Series (OPS). As the CALA English Editor of JLIS (Journal of Library and Information Science), Min worked closely with the entire editorial board members on soliciting and selecting manuscripts, peer-reviewing process and on communicating with the Chief Editor in Taiwan to ensure the timely publication of the English manuscripts. As the chair of the CALA Constitution and Bylaws Committee, Min led the Committee to review the Constitution and Bylaws to address such issues as voting procedure, chapter establishment, and made recommendations for changes where necessary.
Academically, Min is a productive author and sought-after speaker in US, China, Australia, Austria, and Finland. Her significant scholarly achievements and contributions to library profession on such timely topics as copyright, licensing, information literacy, international librarianship and diversity have brought well-earned prestige not only to herself at local, national and international levels, but also to institutions and library communities that she serves.
Min received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the Fudan University in Shanghai, her Master in Library Science from the Pratt Institute in New York, and her Master in Music Education at the New Jersey City University.
