(20190612) Diversity Resident Librarian

The J. Murrey Atkins Library at UNC Charlotte invites applications for the Diversity Resident Librarian. This three year, fixed-term faculty appointment is designed to provide an early career librarian from an underrepresented group the opportunity to develop his/her portfolio, gain professional experience, and benefit from mentoring within a large academic research library. The position will report directly to the Employee Relations & Staff Development Librarian. Librarians at UNC Charlotte hold faculty rank (non-tenure). As a member of the library faculty as a Visiting Assistant Professor, the Diversity Resident Librarian is expected to conduct research, contribute to the profession, and participate in appropriate professional activities. The resident will have the opportunity to serve on and lead library committees related to their area of responsibilities and interests. The incumbent will initially work on assignments within the library’s Technology and Digital Strategies department with the possibility of rotations based on their interest later in the residency. The librarian will work alongside technologists, librarians, and faculty to support Area 49, which encompasses the Technology Support Desk, Visualization Lab, EZ Video Studio, Gaming Lab, Multimedia Lab, Makerspace, and the Teaching and Technology Theater. Projects will be in the areas of emerging technologies, digital scholarship, open access, scholarly communications, and institutional repositories. Projects may include support for Niner Commons, the University’s institutional repository and open access digital publishing.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

● Establish and maintain effective working relations with academic departments and faculty engaged in digital projects;

● Promote the use of the institutional repository and awareness of open access to the campus community;

● Maintain and promote the use of tools, resources, and services that facilitate open scholarly communication, research dissemination, and digital scholarship;

● Work on projects related to developments in emerging technologies in academic libraries and higher education;

● Collaborate with Library Assessment to collect and analyze qualitative and quantitative usage statistics;

● Commitment and/or ability to promote cultural competency, diversity, and/or inclusive excellence;

● Serve on and/or lead committees as assigned;

● Contribute to the profession and maintain professional knowledge through participation in appropriate state, regional and national library (and related) organizations;

Minimum Education/Experience Requirements:

● Master’s degree in Library and/or Information Science from a program accredited by the American Library Association. 

Preferred Education, Skills and Training Experience:

● Knowledge of current issues in scholarly communications (e.g. Open Access, library publishing, copyright, licensing, etc.).

● Excellent oral and written communication skills.

● Demonstrated commitment to exceptional public service.

● Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as well as independently.

● Eagerness to master new skills and technologies and to teach them to others.

● Demonstrated commitment to work effectively with diverse groups and to foster an environment of mutual respect and inclusion.

● Commitment to continuous personal and professional improvement in cultural diversity competence.
