Positions will be filled at the level of Librarian I or Librarian II depending on post MLIS experience. Position will serve as Youth Service Librarian at assigned branch, providing services to young people from birth through age 18, their caregivers and other adult advocates. Youth Service Librarian may also oversee a Teen Center (computer and resource area) with large after-school and Tween/Teenage presence within the branch.

 

DUTIES, FUNTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

1. Provides in-depth reference services and reader's advisory to the public.
2. Compiles bibliographies, reference guides, and indexes.
3. Prepares and presents programs in the community and the library.
4. Purchases and maintains assigned portion of collection according to budgetary guidelines and assesses collection on a regular basis.
5. Appraises, organizes, and processes specialized archival collections.
6. Provides basic preservation of archival materials.
7. Provides instruction and classes in the use of computer hardware and software. Initiates and maintains contact with schools and with other individuals and groups serving youth in the community.
8. Initiates and maintains contact with schools and with other individuals and groups serving youth in the community.
9. Provides library tours and orientations. Explains policies to public and staff.
10. Compiles and prepares reports.
11. Collects, maintains, and prepares reports.

Position may also require:

·       Traveling to other library locations and to area agencies and schools for work related purposes.

·       Providing a full range of children’s and teen services to the public as needed, including delivering storytimes, booktalks, and facilitating programing for young people.

·       May manage and supervise the location’s Connected Youth Computer center, directing teen activities and providing assistance in the use of computers, mobile devices and software.

·       Develop and facilitate enrichment programs tailored to meet the developmental needs of young school aged children, teens and their caregivers.

·       Promote a love of reading through developing displays, activities and resources for children and parents.

·       Build up and engage community participation. Initiates and maintains contact with schools, other individuals and groups serving youth in the community; with the purpose of growing collaborations between the Library and local agencies.

·       Represent the Library at community meetings, back to school events, and other community forums.

·       Collect statistics and prepare monthly reports on programs, projects, and activities offered.

·       May assist in the selection of materials related to youth topics in print, non-print and electronic formats.

·       May assist in volunteer recruitment and supervision. Performs public relations duties as required.

·       May assist in hiring and mentoring employees.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICTIONS:

 

Master's Degree from an ALA accredited Program, or must be received with six (6) months of employment.

Licenses and Certifications Required:

  • May require a valid operator's license and the use of a personal vehicle.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to speak Spanish preferred.
  • Experience working with children and teens.
  • Experience working with culturally diverse populations.
  • Experience working with new media and technologies in a creative or educational capacity.
  • Experience working with Connected Youth Project and understanding of its objectives and goals.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

1. Must be able to stoop, bend, walk and reach to heights of up to six (6) feet.
2. Must be able to pull or lift up to fifty (50) pounds.
3. Must be able to push loaded book truck weighing up to three hundred (300) pounds.
4. Must have manual dexterity to operate computer keyboard.
