(MPK-Cultural Diversity Inquiry)

 

The Ohio State University (OSU) Libraries seeks a dynamic librarian for the position of Mary P. Key Diversity Resident. OSU Libraries’ two-year Mary P. Key Diversity Residency Program provides mentorship for a successful transition from academic training to research librarianship, provides hands- on exposure in many areas of the University Libraries, and contributes to advancing diversity initiatives for both the academic librarianship profession and The Ohio State University Libraries. The program provides professional development in a nurturing, yet productive, real world environment at one of the top 10 public university libraries in the country. The Resident will be encouraged to participate in selected workshops, conferences, and committees and develop a robust portfolio of engagement at the start of their library career.

 

This Resident will advance the understanding of OSUL special collections as resources for cultural diversity inquiry. The University’s commitment to diversity in people and of ideas is supported by the University Libraries’ world class special collections and the enhanced learning experience provided by access to the many significant primary source collections within special collections that reveal cultural diversity. Through innovative research services, the Resident will connect our distinctive collections to curricular opportunities where special collections can enlighten, inspire, and enhance a deep understanding of diversity. Reporting to the Head of Thompson Library Special Collections, the Resident will work in close collaboration with the Head of Research Services, Head of Teaching and Learning, as well as with colleagues in the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum, University Archives, and Area Studies.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Investigate special collections for diversity content. Work with all special collections curators to identify multicultural strengths in holdings.
  • Conduct an environmental scan of teaching departments. Analyze trends and cultural diversity practices in OSU’s arts and humanities departments to develop special collections teaching and research services.
  • Develop an outreach plan to highlight cultural diversity inquiry opportunities including possibilities of LibGuides, blog and social media postings to feature diversity holdings.
  • Advance transformative teaching and foster interdisciplinary collaborations. Actively engage with instructors as partners in integrating information fluency and cultural diversity concepts into curriculum, and connect special collections with subject librarians.
  • Provide consulting. Assist scholars and students with distinctive collections of culturally diverse significance that serve to advance their teaching, learning, and research.

 

  • Work closely with relevant Libraries units to develop metadata that will enable discoverability of culturally diverse materials.
  • Serve on selected library committees and work closely with the Diversity and Inclusion Committee.
  • Begin development of a research agenda that will contribute to an area of scholarship.

 

Qualifications: Required:

  • Master’s degree in Library/Information Science from an ALA-accredited or equivalent program completed by the time of appointment.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with topics related to cultural diversity.
  • Effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Interest in professional development.

 

Desired:

  • Evidence of a user-centered vision.
  • Experience working with special collections.
  • Aptitude for working productively with a diverse range of faculty, students, and academic professional staff.

 

About the Appointment:

This is a full-time, two-year visiting faculty (non-tenure track) position. As a Visiting Faculty member, the Resident is strongly encouraged to engage in professional research and publication. The Resident will provide a faculty annual report as well as periodic reports to the Diversity Committee to track progress on established objectives. Salary is commensurate based on qualifications and experience.
