Global Outreach:
A U.S. - China Experience

With fast approaching dates of the 2008 Olympic Games to be held in Beijing
and a continuously rising economy, China has become a buzzword in the
media nowadays. But how much do we know about library services to users
in China? This program presents first-hand experience from U.S. librarians in
working with the library community in China. One keynote speaker and the
four panelists will present several successful ongoing outreach programs
to the libraries in China.
Keynote Speaker:
- Beverly Lynch
Professor, Graduate School of Education & Information
Studies
University of California at Los Angeles
Beverly P. Lynch is Professor in the Department
of Information Studies at UCLA, where she
teaches courses in management, academic
libraries, information policy, intellectual
freedom, and measurement and evaluation of
libraries and library services. She directs the
Senior Fellows Program, and is the founding director of the
California Rare Book School. She served as Dean of the Graduate
School of Library and Information Science at UCLA, from 1989-
1994, University Librarian and Professor, University of Illinois at
Chicago, 1977-1989, and Executive Secretary of ACRL, 1972-1976.
She was ALA President in 1985 -1986. In 2000?2001, Dr. Lynch was
the President of the Center for Research Libraries, an international
library organization located in Chicago. Dr. Lynch has
published and consulted nationally and internationally in the
areas of library organization and management and academic
libraries, and has long been active in professional organizations,
including numerous ALA committees, boards, and task forces.

Oberlin College Library
Haipeng Li is Reference Librarian/Outreach
Coordinator at Oberlin College, Ohio.
Haipeng has been actively involved in professional
organizations, including ALA, ACRL,
ALAO (Academic Library Association of Ohio),
CALA (Chinese American Librarians Association)
and others. For example, he has been appointed
on the ALA International Relations Committee for 2007-09, is
serving on the ACRL Dr. E.J. Josey Spectrum Scholar Mentoring
Program Committee, and Co-Chair of the JCLC II Steering
Committee. He also serves as a library consultant for academic
libraries in China, India, and Indonesia. Haipeng has taken on
many leadership roles in CALA, including President 2006-07,
Chair of 2006 Conference Planning Committee, Chair of Publications
Committee, Chair of the CALA MW Nomination Committee,
and President of CALA MW Chapter, 2002-2003, among others.
- Trisha Davis [Presentation in PowerPoint]
Head of Serials, Electronic Resources and Rights Management Department
Ohio State University Libraries
Trisha Davis is Head of Serials, Electronic
Resources and Rights Management Department,
Ohio State University Libraries. Trisha has served
twice as a Visiting Program Officer (VPO) for the
Association of Research Libraries from 1997-2004.
Since 2007, she also served as VPO for Mapping of
License Language. She remains actively involved in
committee work for ALA, serving as Chair of the ALCTS Acquisition
Section in 2006-2007. Trisha was awarded the ALA /ALCTS 2000
Bowker/Ulrich's Serials Librarianship Award which recognized her
distinguished contributions to serials librarianship. In 2002 she
received the ALCTS Presidential Citation for her vision and dedication
in developing and presenting "Fundamentals of Acquisitions", a
web-based continuing education course. Trisha has authored a book
on automated serial control systems, and many articles on copyright
and licensing issues for electronic products.

Director/Head Librarian
Illinois Fire Service Institute Library, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Lian Ruan is Director/Head Librarian, Director
of China Programs, of the Illinois Fire Service
Institute (IFSI), University of Illinois at
Urbana?Champaign (UIUC) since 1999. Lian
serves on several professional committees,
such as the Illinois State Library’s IILINET
Network Advisory Council (INAC) (2003-2009), Board of Director
Special Libraries Illinois Chapter (2002-2004), and inFIRE
(an international fire library consortium) Committee (1996-
2001). With numerous publications, her research interests cover
use and user of information, outreach library services, special
library administration and international librarianship. She is
the winner of the Special Libraries Association (SLA) Diversity
Leadership Development Program award and UIUC Chancellor's
Academic Professional Excellence award. She has helped
organize the Chinese Librarians Summer Program since 2005 in
cooperation with partners both in the United States and China.

- Since King Harbor Seafood is on Harbor Blvd, it is accessible by the Orange
County Transportation Agency's bus system and a nonprofit shuttle service
called the Anaheim Resort Transit (ART) system. Day passes on either line
are $3.
OCTA Line 043 (Harbor Blvd-South) runs about every 15 mins even on Sunday.
After 8 p.m., Line 043 runs every hour (but it runs all night!)
