Mentorship Program

Goals:

Eligibility:

Valid CALA membership is required.
A mentee may be a student of library and information science, a new librarian, a librarian in a tenure-track position, or any librarian who needs advice from seasoned CALA members on a similar career path.
A mentor is a person who is an experienced librarian, and willing to provide advice and share experience with students and new librarians.

How to apply?

Complete the Mentee Application Form or the Mentor Registration Form. Mentors and mentees will be matched based on the information provided. You will be notified of the match once it is finalized.

Mentorship Program Guidelines

  1. Responsibilities of Mentee:
    • Make initial contact with your assigned mentor. Agree on the best communication methods.
    • Introduce yourself to your mentor. An updated vita may be a good start.
    • Convey your interests and area of needs you want covered during the mentorship period. Please make your needs specific so you can get feedback from your mentor about whether those needs can be met.
    • Submit a program evaluation by May 1.

  2. Responsibilities of Mentor:
    By agreeing to be a mentor, you will be helping a new professional or library school student to develop his/her professional career with information, experience, and encouragement. Email is usually the convenient way of communication.
    • Send a welcome message to the mentee.
    • Discuss with your mentee what you can do to meet his/her needs.
    • Work with your mentee to achieve a common goal within the program time frame.
    • Provide needed help and advice to the mentee.
    • Submit a program evaluation by May 1.

  3. Responsibilities of Mentor and Mentee:
    • Set up the method and frequency of continued communication.
    • Determine activities/projects within the program time frame. Possible topics: sharing professional experience, introducing grant opportunities, providing career advice, developing a research topic, refining or creating a resume, exploring professional/career development interests and continued education opportunities, assisting in self-assessment, creating a personal web page, or encouraging participation in professional organizations and listserv(s).
    • Determine how to proceed with the project and agree on the time that both of you can devote to the program.
    • Be timely in your correspondence and communications.
    • Be courteous and considerate to one another's needs and limitations.
    • Show respect, and deal with issues in a professional manner.
    • Both parties are encouraged but not required to meet at the CALA annual program (same time frame as the ALA annual).
    • If possible, take the opportunity to make a presentation at the local chapter or CALA annual program and/or publish your experience in the Journal of Library and Information Science (JLIS), or the CALA Newsletter to share with others.

Mentorship Program Announcement

Dear Colleagues:

We are pleased to announce that the 2011/2012 Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA) Mentorship Program is now open for applications.

The main goals of the CALA Mentorship Program are:

  • To encourage and guide Chinese or Chinese American students of library and information science with career planning
  • To help new Chinese American librarians to develop their professional careers
  • To recruit and provide a pool of experienced Chinese American librarians as potential mentors

Please fill out the appropriate form to indicate your desire to be a "mentee" or a "mentor." Participants of a previous year need to fill out the form again to join this year's program.

Please encourage Chinese or Chinese American students who study at the School of Library and Information Science in your areas to participate in the program. Non members should join CALA first. Here is the Membership Application Form: http://www.cala-web.org/node/306.
