The CALA Conference Travel Grant is established to support CALA members in their efforts to play an active role at professional conferences for their professional or career development. The grant is issued annually and coincides with the fiscal period (from July to June each year) of CALA’s operation. For each funding period, up to four awards of equal amount of $500 will be given to qualified candidates to defray their expenses for traveling to conferences.

Applications will be reviewed and evaluated by the CALA Travel Grant Committee based on the following criteria:

A complete application, including the required documents, should be emailed to Ying Xu, Chair of the CALA Conference Travel Grant Committee, yxu1@calstatela.edu.
All applications must be submitted before or by the deadline of April 10, 2013.
Grant recipients will be notified no later than May 20, 2013 and will receive a check of $500 from CALA Treasurer after the announcement of the funding decision.
Each grant recipient must submit a one-page report of his/her experience to the CALA Travel Grant Committee, within the two months following the conference s/he attended.
The submitted reports will be posted on the CALA website and published in the CALA Newsletter.
In case the grant recipient has cancelled his/her travel plan, the full amount of the fund ($500) must be returned to CALA with a written explanation within two months of the cancellation.
The CALA Executive Committee and the Conference Travel Grant Committee will reserve the right to withhold the award of the travel grant subject to the financial position of CALA, or if there is no qualified candidate in the pool during a given year.

These Scholarships are designed to encourage professional and leadership development in Chinese American librarianship. They are open to full-time students of Chinese heritage who are currently enrolled in an ALA-accredited master's or doctoral program of library and information science at an institution of higher education in North America. The recipient must be enrolled as a full-time student at the time the Scholarship is awarded. Applicants may apply for any or all of the scholarships listed above.

A list of recipients for CALA Scholarships.
Ms. Jennifer Shuang is awarded the CALA Scholarship of Library and Information Science. She is currently working on her Master of Library and Information Studies at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). Ms. Shuang has outstanding academic performance including 4.0 GPA, Lawrence Clark & Fay Shoemaker Powell Fellowship and Dean's Scholar. As a second-generation Chinese American, she has a strong career interest in East Asian Librarianship as well as a passion for diverse community. She is active in volunteering at different library organizations to serve Asian-American populations. In addition, she has organized the support group and provided homework assistance for Asian immigrants. Her leadership potential is demonstrated in her current role as Co-Vice President of Special Libraries Association, UCLA Student Chapter and Faculty Liaison, Student Governing Board, and UCLA Dept. of Information Studies. The CALA Scholarship of Library and Information Science will help her "be an active contributor in building the future" and " transform her into a more effective and empathetic leader, and a more experienced information professional in various cultural environments."
Ms. Pei Yu Lin is awarded the Sheila Suen Lai Scholarship of Library and Information Science. She is currently working on her MLIS at University of Washington. Ms. Lin came to the United States when she was 17. She overcame her language and culture barriers with hard work and perseverance. Her professors praised her as a great student, who "demonstrated diligence, leadership, thoughtfulness and insight in her performance in the course. Her written work has always been first-rate." Her IT background led her to a summer internship with Boeing in 2010 and a study abroad opportunity in the Netherlands. Her leadership potential is demonstrated in her current role as the UW iSchool MLIS Student ambassador. The CALA Sheila Suen Lai Scholarship of Library and Information Science Scholarship will help her in pursuing learning opportunities to succeed in librarianship.
Ms. Yanjuan Zou is awarded the C.C. Seetoo/CALA Conference Travel Scholarship. Ms. Zou is currently a master student at the School of Library and Information Studies, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. As a native Chinesepursuing the MLIS degree in the United States, Ms. Zou has diverse work experiences and exceptional academic performance. She worked as research assistant in Tianjin Normal University, the library assistant in Duke University Library and the teaching assistant in the Department of Asian Studies, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her professors praised her as reliable worker with detailed, thorough and responsible attitude in assigned tasks of grading students' papers. In leadership potential, she was the recipient of ARL Career Enhancement Fellowship (CEP), and CALA Dr. Tze-Chung Li Student Membership Grant , and a participant in the CALA Leadership Symposium. The C.C. Seetoo/CALA Conference Travel Scholarship will help her toward the internship at University of Arizona as a fellow of CEP of the Research Service Support Team.
Ms. Sara Wang is rewarded the Huang Tso-ping and Wu Yao-yu Scholarship (USA). Ms. Wang is a student at the School of Library and Information Science, University of Washington. She has a well-balanced outstanding performance in academic and community service. Some commendation from her references includes "self driven, reliable, honest and trust worthy" "a self-motivated hardworking person and a fast learner." Ms. Wang has a passion for diverse community; she dedicates herself to the needs of the community with her earnest efforts. Currently she is volunteering as a facilitator at Talk-Time, a free English conversation class offered by the Seattle Public Library Literacy Program. Her leadership is demonstrated in her role as the Publicity Officer in Association of Library and Information Science Students, Director of Public Relations in Informatics Undergraduate Association.
Ms. Wang has a strong background in technology application in library. The Huang Tso-ping and Wu Yao-yu Scholarship (USA) will help her to pursue her career goals.

The Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA) is pleased to announce the recipients of the four 2010 CALA scholarships: Ms. Qinqin Zhang from the University of British Columbia, Ms. Teresa Nesbitt from the Florida State University, Mr. Yang Yang from Clarion University of Pennsylvania, and Ms. Laura Fu from the University of Wisconsin---Milwaukee. The award ceremony will be held on Sunday, June 27, 2010, 6:30 - 10: 30 p.m. at the CALA Annual Awards Banquet, in conjunction with the 2010 ALA Annual Conference to be held in Washington D.C.
Ms. Qinqin Zhang is awarded the CALA Scholarship of Library and Information Science. She is currently working on her Master of Library and Information Studies at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC, Canada. She holds a Bachelor of Engineering from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and a Master of Science in Instructional Technology from Lehigh University USA. She was a member of Phi Beta Delta International Honor Society, and she also earned Lehigh University Scholarship in 2006. Ms. Zhang is well performed in the areas of industriousness, dependability and Interpersonal skills. "Qinqin was a key contributor and active participant on many of the teams that updated library training modules, marketing materials and the library webpage. She has "inner drive and commitment to accomplish her goals combined with the understanding that the best results are achieved through the combined efforts of others". The CALA Scholarship of Library and information Science will help her "in providing public service to diverse patrons" and in exploring "what is best for the people she serves and what is the best path for her individual growth as a global citizen". And this award offers her the opportunity to "play a more prominent role in the profession".
Ms. Teresa Nesbitt is awarded the Sheila Suen Lai Scholarship of Library and Information Science. She is currently working on her MLIS at College of Communication and Information Florida State University, Tallahassee. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Notre Dame. She is a member of the ALA Intellectual Freedom Round Table and a member of the FSU InternatioNOLE program. Ms. Nesbitt is well performed in the areas of industrious, communication skills, dependability and leadership. "Teresa is an extraordinary bright and creating young woman. She has love of learning, respect for scholarship and intellectual curiosity, trait that will make her an excellent librarian." The CALA Sheila Suen Lai Scholarship of Library and Information Science scholarship will help her in her "professional development, both in supplementing education with cutting-edge information and for the chance to meet and exchange ideas with other librarians" at the American Library Association annual conference in Washington D.C. 2010.
Mr. Yang Yang is awarded the C.C. Seetoo/CALA Conference Travel Scholarship. Mr. Yang is currently a master student at the School of Library and Information Studies, Clarion University of Pennsylvania. He holds a Master of Education on Physics and a Bachelor of Educational Technology from Capital Normal University, China. Mr. Yang is well performed in the areas of industriousness, dependability and leadership. "Yang is always prepared with his work and seeks out opportunities to explore cataloging resources and information in order to more fully understand the work he is assigned. He has demonstrated excellent potential for both academic and professional achievement". The C.C. Seetoo/CALA Conference Travel Scholarship will help him in mentoring and networking at the ALA/CALA Annual Conference in Washington D. C., 2010.
Ms. Laura Fu is rewarded the Huang Tso-ping and Wu Yao-yu Scholarship (USA). Ms. Fu is a student at the School of Library and Information Science, University of Wisconsin---Milwaukee. She "has been the minority as a female and Chinese-American in television news, as a Chinese-American librarian and even as simply a video asset manager, a position which is rather rare." The Huang Tso-ping and Wu Yao-yu Scholarship (USA) will help her to continue pursuing her personal career goals and her aspirations for a better representation of Chinese-Americans.CALA is pleased to be able to provide support to these outstanding students in their library professional education through these scholarships for the year 2009-2010.
2009 CALA Scholarship Recipients
CALA Scholarship Committee is pleased to announce the recipients of the four 2009 CALA scholarships: Silvia Lu from University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Danitta Wong from Simmons College, Kam Yan Lee from Queens College, the City University of New York, and May P.Y. Yan from the University of Toronto.
Silvia Lu is the recipient of the 2009 CALA Scholarship of Library and Information Science. Ms. Lu is enrolled as an M.S. candidate in the Library and Information Science Program at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC.) Lu's academic performance is outstanding. One of her references comments that "Her knowledge, her responses, her interest, her enthusiasm and her creativeness were well above the other men and women in a class of really outstanding graduate students. She brought an excitement and level of achievement that were exceptional." Another reference commented that "Sylvia has extended herself academically by taking courses in addition to the library school curriculum, including an English culture class and introduction to French". As a student, Ms. Lu is active in the Library field and serves as the Publicity Officer of American Library Association Student Chapter at UIUC. She is also a volunteer at the Center for Children's Books of the Graduate School of Library and Information Science of UIUC. This year, she made a presentation entitled An Unselective Memory: Library and Archives Canada and the Struggle towards an Honest Cultural Heritage at a student conference at the University of Toronto. Prior to entering the Library School, Ms. Lu had worked her way through her college education at different jobs, including a position as a library assistant in public and college libraries. One of her references commented that "From the very beginning, Silvia exhibited a strong sense of self, of determination in her academic achievements, and of her desire to excel professionally. She was unwavering in her commitment to her studies and to her job." Another reference further elaborates: Ms. Lu "is going to go far in the profession. She will be a dynamic leader and bring new excitement to anything she undertakes."
Danitta Wong is the recipient of the Sheila Suen Lai Scholarship. Ms. Wang is an MLS student at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science of Simmons College. While maintaining an excellent academic performance, she has worked as a volunteer at the Teen Room of the Brookline Public Library's Main Branch. One of her references commented that "I can speak for Ms. Wong's professional potential, and I believe Danita will be a strong addition to the profession. Volunteering here can be as little or as much as the volunteers wish to make, and Danitta has been generous with her time in volunteering to help out not only by monitoring the Teen Room but also taking on other tasks... Part of being successful in librarianship counts on innovation and industriousness as well s an outgoing, friendly nature, all traits which Danitta has in spades. I encourage you to consider her as a strong candidate for these scholarships."
Kam Yan Lee is the recipient of the 2009 C. C. Seetoo Conference Travel Scholarship. Ms. Lee is an MLS student in the Library Science program at Queens College, the City University of New York. Her academic performance is outstanding. Professor Kwong-bo Ng of Queens College commented that Ms. Lee "has a strong academic background with solid research skills. She is intelligent and self-motivated. Her excellent academic records reflect her strong academic abilities. She shows a firm mastery of the fundamental knowledge in library science, especially in the field of digital librarianship." "Ms. Lee has strong motivation to develop a professional career in library science. May P.Y. Yan is the recipient of the Huang Tso-ping and Wu Yao-yu Scholarship. Ms.Yan is currently enrolled as a candidate of the Master of Information Studies Program at the Information School of the University of Toronto. Helen Katz, her instructor, commented that "May approached the class quite professionally and worked diligently...Ms. Yan was the best student in the class and one of the best students that I have had in the last five years." Ms. Katz continued "I expect Ms. Yan to do extremely well in the profession and I look forward to being a professional colleague of Ms. Yan's." Ms. Yan also has years of experience working with the Goldman Sachs Group in New York and holds a BAS in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Toronto.

2008 CALA Scholarship Recipients
The Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA) is pleased to announce the recipients of the three 2008 CALA scholarships:
Vivian Wong from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), Stephen Chan from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC), and Tiffany Chao from the University of Michigan.
The CALA Awards Banquet will be held on Sunday, June 29, 2008, from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm at King Harbor Seafood Restaurant, 13018 Harbor Blvd., Garden Grove, CA 92843, in conjunction with the 2008 ALA Annual Conference in Anaheim, CA.
Ms. Vivian Wong is the recipient of the 2008 CALA Scholarship of Library and Information Science. Ms. Wong is currently a doctoral student in the Department of Information Studies at UCLA. She has earned her M.F.A. degree in directing from UCLA and her B.A. degree in East Asian Studies from Bryn Mawr College.
As a filmmaker and an information specialist, Ms. Wong has dedicated herself to documenting personal as well as collective experiences and memories of Asian Americans. She has also taught courses in community media, video ethnography, and documentary filmmaking.
All her references for her application of the scholarship held high opinion of her. Dr. Robert A. Nakamura, professor of Asian American Studies and director of the Center for Ethno Communications at UCLA, described Ms. Wong as "a talented filmmaker, a committed community documentarian, and a dedicated teacher." Professor Anne Gilliland from the Graduate School of Education & Information Studies at UCLA praised her as "a most interesting and distinctive student" for the school and for the LIS field due to her innovative approach to archival studies through filmmaking. In his reference letter, Dr. Florante Peter Ibanez, manager of Library Computer Services at Loyola Law School, Los Angels, commented that Ms. Wong is dedicated to the service of the Asian American community and the library and information studies profession needs more committed people like her.
Mr. Stephen Chan is awarded Sheila Suen Lai Scholarship. Stephen Chan is a graduate student in the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Stephen has a great passion for librarianship in general, and law librarianship in particular. He has held three different positions at the UNC Law Library: a reference assistant, a research assistant for the Faculty Research Service researching legal and interdisciplinary issues for the faculty, and a research assist for the Deputy Director with the completion of a book project. His supervisors and the faculty he has worked with have been deeply impressed by his motivation, personality, and commitment to legal research and librarianship. Stephen personifies a high degree of initiative and industriousness not only in the way he has sought out multiple relevant work at the UNC Law Library but also in his intellectual, thorough and professional approach to his duties at these different positions. In addition, Stephen has made a tremendous effort to become involved in professional and leadership activities. He is a member of the American Library Association, American Association of Law Libraries, Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association, Association of College & Research Libraries, North Carolina Library Association, and Special Libraries Association. Stephen has recently been elected President of the school's chapter of the Special Libraries Association.
Stephen Chan has previously been recipient of the American Library Association Spectrum Scholarship and Franklin Pierce Law Center Scholarship.
Ms. Tiffany Chao is the recipient of the Huang Tso-ping and Wu Yao-yu Scholarship. She is pursuing her master degree at the University of Michigan, School of Information. In addition to her excellent academic coursework, Ms. Chao has been involved in various of research projects and community services through her undergraduate and graduate education. She has been a research assistant to a number of research institutions and presented her research at several conferences. Ms. Chao has been an officer, secretary, and a reorder of Tau Beta Sigma-Lambda Chapter, an honorary band service sorority and a volunteer of the Dance Marathon, a student-run philanthropy program for C.S. Mott's Children Hospital. The honors Ms. Chao has received include Rackham Graduate School Travel Grant, Gwinn-Cole Family Scholarship, Eli Lilly Research and Travel Award and Tau Beta Sigma-Outstanding Academic Achievement Award. She is also an active student member of Society of American Archivists and Special Libraries Association.
All three references gave Ms. Chao extremely high marks on her academic performance, community service and leadership development. Ms. Shao-Chen Lin
Head of Technical Services at Lincolnwood Public Library District wrote "Ms. Chao has always displayed a high degree of integrity, responsibility, and ambition. She has taken the initiative to immerse herself in the information services through her participation in the Art Libraries Society of North America annual conference and her research assistant positions which focus on the user-perspective of how information is communicated and used." And "she has proven her leadership ability and responsibility through coordinating and conducting nationally-funded research studies for hundreds of participants." Dr. Alen Sanders, director of Behavior Genetics Unit Center for Psychiatric Genetics wrote "I was very impressed by Ms. Chao's work ethic, communication skills, proficiency at a number of computer programs necessary for our work, responsibility, trustworthiness, flexibility, adaptability, enthusiasm and initiative."

2006 CALA Scholarship Recipients
The Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA) is pleased to announce the recipients of the four 2006 CALA scholarships:
Xiao Hu from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), Candice Anne Wing-Yee Mack from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), Allan Cho from the University of British Columbia (UBC), and Neely Tang from the University of Pittsburgh.
The award ceremony will be held at the CALA Awards Banquet scheduled Sunday, June 25, 2006, 7:00 - 10:00 pm, in conjunction with the 2006 ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans.
Ms. Xiao Hu, a doctoral student at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, has won the 2006 CALA Scholarship of Library and Information Science.
Ms. Hu has a background in engineering, having earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Electronics & Information Systems from Wuhan University, and a Master of Science degree in Circuits & Systems from Beijing University of Posts & Telecommunications before coming to the U.S. In her reference letter, Linda C. Smith, Professor and Associate Dean at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, described Ms. Hu as a very talented researcher. The papers she collaborated with Professor Stephen Downie and others dealing with various aspects of music information retrieval were accepted in various conferences.
Supervisors of her research assistantships, teaching assistantships, and internships have all had high praise for her accomplishments and abilities. Haiying Qian , Catalog Librarian at St. Mary-of-the-Woods College, also praised Ms. Hu's leadership in her role as the President of the GSLIS Chinese Group at the University. Ms. Hu has received many awards and scholarships, including the Best Poster Award at the Joint Conference on Digital Libraries. She is a member of CALA Midwest Chapter, currently serving on the Membership Committee.
Ms. Candice Anne Wing-Yee Mack is the recipient of the C.C. Seetoo Conference Travel Scholarship. Ms. Mack is currently pursuing her Master in Library Science at the School of Library and Information Science, University of California Los Angeles. Irene Lovas, Senior Medical Librarian at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, cites Ms. Mack for her exceptional organizational and problem solving skills her willingness to take on new challenges, accept responsibilities, learn new technologies and expand her knowledge base of library and information service. Previous scholarships awarded to Ms. Mack include the Medical Library Group of Southern California & Arizona Scholarship 2006; University of California Los Angeles Graduate Fellowship 2005; and the American Library Association, MLA/NLM Spectrum Scholarship 2005. Ms. Mack will use the C.C. Seeto Conference Travel Scholarship to attend the 2006 ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans.
Mr. Allan Cho is awarded Sheila Suen Lai Scholarship. Mr. Cho is currently enrolled in a program of Master of Library, Archival, and Information Studies at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. He received his Master Degree of Arts, major in history from the same University in 2004. As Editor-in-Chief of UBC Perspectives Newspaper, the first Chinese-English bilingual student publication in Western Canada, he has initiated a fundraising campaign for the Earthquake disaster in Southern Asia. Professor Martin Dowding from the School of Library, Archival, and Information Study at the University of British Columbia praised Mr. Cho that is extremely intelligent, works very hard, and will make an excellent information specialist.
Ms. Neely Jo-Tung Tang is the recipient of the Huang Tso-ping and Wu Yao-yu Scholarship. She is currently pursuing her Master in the Library & Information Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh. She believes that increasing diversity in our profession would make customers, from all backgrounds, more comfortable in using libraries.
In a reference letter, Dr. Toni Carbo, Professor (former Dean) of the school of Information Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh, writes that. Tang is an exceptional student, who is resourceful, creative, and a person of high integrity. And she is an outstanding thinker, who demonstrates very high likelihood of being a real star. Other honors awarded to Ms. Tang include the 2005-06 Betty Turock Spectrum Scholar-American Library Association. She will be attending the ALA conference this June as University of Pittsburgh student-to-staff representative.

2005 CALA Scholarship Recipients

The Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA) is pleased to announce the recipients of the four 2005 CALA scholarships: Ms. Donghua Tao from the University of Missouri, Mr. Zhi Xian Yi at the Texas Woman’s University, Ms. Hairong Zhu at the Kent State University, and Mr. Yang Jin from University of Michigan. The award ceremony will be held on Sunday, June 26, 2005, 7:00 – 10: 00 p.m. at the CALA Annual Awards Banquet, in conjunction with the 2005 ALA Annual Conference to be held in Chicago.
Ms. Donghua Tao, a doctoral student at the University of Missouri’s School of Information Science & Learning Technologies, has won the 2005 CALA Scholarship of Library and Information Science. Ms. Tao earned a MLS degree with specialty in medical librarianship at the same university. She has also concurrently enrolled in a program of Master of Health Informatics. In a reference letter from Dr. Sanda Erdelez, Associate Professor at the School of Information Science and Learning Technology at the University of Missouri, she commends that “Donghua impressed me as very intelligent, articulate, and focused person,” and “she possesses a strong interest in library and information science, especially in understanding how people in the medical community access and use information.” As a promising scholar in the library profession, Ms. Tao has published three articles on peer-reviewed journals. She gave numerous presentations at the conferences held by the Association for Library and Information Science Education (ALISE), Missouri Library Association, and American Medical Informatics Association. She will give a presentation at the 2005 ALA Annual Conference in Chicago. Ms. Tao is a student member of CALA (since 2001), American Medical Information Association, Medical Library Association, American Society for Information Science and Technology, Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society, Special Library Association, and American Library Association. In a reference letter, Professor John Budd, Associate Director of the School of Information Science and Learning Technologies of the University of Missouri, further elaborates that “I believe we have a professional responsibility both to support scholars and professionals of promise and to reward accomplishments. Awarding a scholarship to Ms. Tao would embrace and accomplish both of these responsibilities.”
Mr. Zhi Xian Yi is awarded the Sheila Suen Lai Scholarship. Mr. Yi is currently a doctoral student at the School of Library and Information Studies, Texas Woman’s University. He received a MLS degree from Southern Connecticut State University and M.A. in English from Central South University, Human, China. Professor Sylvia Vardell at the School of Library and Information Studies, Texas Woman’s University, praises that Mr. Yi “is very hard working and conscientious, determined to achieve his goals and make a difference.” Another professor, Dr. Keith Swigger, comments that “Mr. Yi combines intellectual gifts with ambition and energy. His dedication and unceasing efforts to produce the high quality work distinguished him among students.”
Ms. Hairong Zhu is a recipient of the C.C. Seetoo Conference Travel Scholarship. Ms. Zhu is a student at the School of Library and Information Science, Kent State University. Yin Zhang, Associate Professor at the School of Library and Information Science of the Kent State University, praises Ms. Zhu that “she is a very motivated learner and an employee as evidenced by the awards she received for her excellence for her school work and professional work. Recently, she won the 2004 Academic Library Association of Ohio’s minority student scholarship. She is definitely on track for academic and professional achievements.” Ms. Zhu plans to use the fund to attend the 2005 ALA Annual Conference in Chicago.
Mr. Yang Jin is a winner of the Huang Tso-ping and Wu Yao-yu Scholarship. Mr. Jin is now pursuing his Master of Science in Information degree at the University of Michigan, with a specialization in human computer interaction. Xiao-Wen Zou, Academic Advisor of School of Information Science at the University of Michigan, believes in Mr. Jin that “with his solid academic background, years of overseas experience and sustaining self-confidence, I envision that he would have a huge potential for great academic and professional success in the near future.”

Sheila Suen Lai Scholarship of Library and Information Science ($500.00) - Iva Seto
Miss Seto has impeccable academic records: first class standing, dean's honor list, and two other scholarships. With a B.S. degree specialize in molecular genetics and also a B.A. degree in comparative literature, Ms. Seto is currently working on her master degree of Library and Information Studies at University of Alberta, Canada. Her career goal is focused on international medical librarianship. She has stated very clearly of her research topic which is in creating standards for Chinese medical information brought into Western databases. Her advisor comments Ms Seto has "strong leadership skills." The whole application packet is well prepared and personal statement is well written. We recommend her without any reservation.

Miss. Fang received her B.A. degree from Tainjin University, China in 2001. 2003 CALA Scholarship Recipients

Dori Hsiao: recipient of the 2003 C.C. Seetoo/CALA Conference Travel Scholarship
With a BA in English from UC Berkeley, Ms. Hsiao is planning to receive the Masters of Library & Information Science (MLIS) from the Department of Information Studies, UCLA, this June. Her library experience included working at the Harrison Memorial Library in Carmel, California, and volunteering at San Francisco Public Library's Chinatown branch. She also worked at the Walt Disney Imagineering Information Resource Library. Currently, she is an intern at the UCLA Fowler Museum of Cultural History. Her professional focus is primarily with the metadata, thesauri, and digital resources. She is interested in developing innovative and elegant library tools, and providing efficient reference services to support public's needs for joyful learning experience.
Yu Su: recipient of the 2003 Huang Tso-ping and Wu Yao-yu Scholarship
Yu Su is currently a Master's degree candidate at the School of Library Science, University of Arizona. She received her B.A. in Economics from the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing. At the University of Arizona, Yu has worked as the Student Assistant in the East Asian Collection and as a Graduate Research Assistant. She has distinguished herself with several research projects, among them one on "Digital Library of Information Science and Technology," which has been accepted by the International Poster Session at the 2003 ALA/CLA Annual Conference.

2002 CALA Scholarship Recipients
The Scholarship Committee is pleased to announce the recipients of the three 2002 CALA scholarships. Ms. Fei Yu has won the Sheila Suen Lai Scholarship of Library and Information Science, Ms. Su Yu the C.C. Seetoo/CALA Conference Travel Scholarship, and Ms. Beverly Anmay Ku the Huang Tso-ping and Wu Yao-yu Scholarship. All three recipients have a record of outstanding academic credentials and accomplishments, and have demonstrated strong potential for future leadership in the profession.
Fei Yu: recipient of the 2002 Sheila Suen Lai Scholarship of Library and Information Science
Holding a Master of Management degree and a B.A. in library science both from Wuhan University, China, she is currently a library and information science Ph.D. student at the University of Pittsburgh. An already established scholar, she has published largely on topics of library science and done researches in such broad areas as digital library, reference services, library human resources, information technology in East Asian libraries, and computer-assisted instruction for distance education. She has also received several awards including the 2000 Outstanding Graduate Student and the 1998 Academic Excellence Graduate Student of Wuhan University over the past years.
In addition, she has varied teaching experiences in China and has been gaining first-hand library service experience by working as a graduate assistant at the University Library System of the University of Pittsburgh. Thrilled by the prospect of the information profession, she will dedicate herself to library management, information communication for cultural diversity, and education of information professionals
Yu Su: recipient of the 2002 C.C. Seetoo/CALA Conference Travel Scholarship
She is presently a MLS degree student with the School of Information Resources and Library Science at the University of Arizona. While taking courses in the School of Information Resources and Library Science, she has worked as a student worker for the East Asian Collection of the University of Arizona and developed strong interest in library research. Her paper Cultural Issues in Health Information Seeking has been accepted by the ALA Fifth Annual Diversity Fair, and she will present her research findings at the upcoming ALA Annual Conference in Atlanta. She expects to meet CALA members and many other professionals at ALA and learn from their expertise and experiences.
Prior to studying at the University of Arizona, she obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of International Business and Economics, Beijing, China and worked with a number of business corporations and the Xishuangbanna Library in China. She has received academic awards from both the University of Arizona and the University of International Business and Economics. For instance, the Graduate Tuition Scholarship of the University of Arizona and the Scholarship of ?hree Merits Students of the University of International Business and Economics. Besides her excellent academic pursuits, she has multiple talents in other fields--She won the special award in the fiddle division of the 2nd Beijing Student Art Festival in 1999 and received honorary award for her opera performance in Kunming in 1998.
Beverly Anmay Ku: recipient of the 2002 Huang Tso-ping and Wu Yao-yu Scholarship
She is currently pursuing her Master of Science in Information degree at the School of Information, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Prior to Michigan, she has obtained a MA in Social/Cultural Anthropology from the University of California, San Diego and a BA in Political Science and Psychology from the University of California, Berkeley. A distinguished student and academic achiever, she received several academic honors and awards, including the reputable ALA Spectrum Initiative Scholarship, the Full Tuition General Scholarship from the University of Michigan, and the Public Library Association Travel Grant in March 2002. While she is pursuing her MSI degree, she has been also working in several places at the University of Michigan including the Museum of Anthropology, the Institute of Social Research, and the Government Documents Library. She has helped revamp and update the Museum's web site and prepared research reports on the use of international laws for a political science faculty member.
She has been a member of ALA and APALA (the Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association). Her career goal is public librarianship and aspires to serve the broader society through library services and promote the presence of Asian professionals in the country.

2001 CALA Scholarship Recipients

The Sheila Suen Lai Scholarship goes to Amy J. Chow who is currently pursuing her MLIS degree at Dalhousie University in Canada. As a Chinese Canadian, Amy hopes to bring perspective to library profession where diversity is becoming greater concern.
The C. C. Seetoo/CALA Conference Travel Scholarship goes to S. Raymond Wang who is currently in a doctoral study program in information literacy and technology at the University of New York at Albany. Raymond is interested in academic librarianship in the area of web-based instruction and ESL user characteristics. Raymond also expressed an interest in taking on volunteer responsibilities at ALA/CALA.

The Chinese American Librarians Association is pleased to announce that Ms. Bin Li is the Year 2000 recipient of the Sheila S. Lai Scholarship, and Ms. Yue Ji the winner of the Year 2000 C.C. Seetoo/CALA Conference Travel Scholarship. The Award Ceremony will be held on July 9, 2000, at the CALA Annual Awards Banquet, in conjunction with the 2000 ALA Annual Conference in Chicago.
Ms. Bin Li, the Sheila S. Lai Scholarship recipient, is a doctoral student of the School of Library and Information Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She was recognized by the Scholarship Committee for her excellent credentials, and her strong potential to make significant contributions to librarianship. Ms. Li holds a B.A. in English, with a minor in Library and Information Science from Beijing Foreign Studies University in China. Prior to her doctoral studies, Ms. Li was a lecturer at the English Program for Information Management Studies at the Beijing Foreign Studies University in China. She was the recipient of the Margaret Ellen Kalp Fellowship in 1999, and the winner of the scholarship from the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia from 1993 to 1995. Ms. Li has a passion for teaching, and is also interested in researching into the widening gap between the info-rich and info-poor. She aspires to help less advantaged groups to better adapt to the changes in information societies.
Ms. Yue Ji, the recipient of the C.C. Seetoo/CALA Conference Travel Scholarship, is a graduate student of the School of Library and Information Science at Louisiana State University. She attended the 1999 ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans, and really appreciated the experience, especially the opportunity to meet many Chinese American librarians. The C.C. Seetoo/CALA Conference Travel Scholarship is awarded to Ms. Ji to partially subsidize her attendance at the ALA Annual Conference in Chicago. As the recipient of the scholarship, Ms. Ji will assist in CALA activities during the annual conference besides attending ALA and CALA programs that interest her. Ms. Ji expressed her desire to be involved with CALA, and was recognized by the Scholarship Committee for her dedication, diligence, resourcefulness, thoughtfulness, and above all, very strong leadership.
Each scholarship carries a cash award of $500. CALA is an affiliate of the American Library Association.

These Scholarships are designed to encourage professional and leadership development in Chinese American librarianship. They are open to full-time students of Chinese heritage who are currently enrolled in an ALA-accredited master's or doctoral program of library and information science at an institution of higher education in North America. The recipient must be enrolled as a full-time student at the time the Scholarship is awarded. Applicants may apply for any or all of the scholarships listed above.

2006 CALA Scholarship Recipients

The Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA) is pleased to announce the recipients of the four 2006 CALA scholarships:
Xiao Hu from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), Candice Anne Wing-Yee Mack from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), Allan Cho from the University of British Columbia (UBC), and Neely Tang from the University of Pittsburgh.
The award ceremony will be held at the CALA Awards Banquet scheduled Sunday, June 25, 2006, 7:00 - 10:00 pm, in conjunction with the 2006 ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans.
Ms. Xiao Hu, a doctoral student at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, has won the 2006 CALA Scholarship of Library and Information Science.
Ms. Hu has a background in engineering, having earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Electronics & Information Systems from Wuhan University, and a Master of Science degree in Circuits & Systems from Beijing University of Posts & Telecommunications before coming to the U.S. In her reference letter, Linda C. Smith, Professor and Associate Dean at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, described Ms. Hu as a very talented researcher. The papers she collaborated with Professor Stephen Downie and others dealing with various aspects of music information retrieval were accepted in various conferences.
Supervisors of her research assistantships, teaching assistantships, and internships have all had high praise for her accomplishments and abilities. Haiying Qian , Catalog Librarian at St. Mary-of-the-Woods College, also praised Ms. Hu’s leadership in her role as the President of the GSLIS Chinese Group at the University. Ms. Hu has received many awards and scholarships, including the Best Poster Award at the Joint Conference on Digital Libraries ’05. She is a member of CALA’s Midwest Chapter, currently serving on the Membership Committee.
Ms. Candice Anne Wing-Yee Mack is the recipient of the C.C. Seetoo Conference Travel Scholarship. Ms. Mack is currently pursuing her Master’s in Library Science at the School of Library and Information Science, University of California – Los Angeles. Irene Lovas, Senior Medical Librarian at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, cites Ms. Mack for her “exceptional organizational and problem solving skills”, her willingness “to take on new challenges, accept responsibilities, learn new technologies and expand her knowledge base of library and information service.” Previous scholarships awarded to Ms. Mack include the Medical Library Group of Southern California & Arizona Scholarship 2006; University of California – Los Angeles Graduate Fellowship 2005; and the American Library Association, MLA/NLM Spectrum Scholarship 2005. Ms. Mack will use the C.C. Seeto Conference Travel Scholarship to attend the 2006 ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans.
Mr. Allan Cho is awarded Sheila Suen Lai Scholarship. Mr. Cho is currently enrolled in a program of Master of Library, Archival, and Information Studies at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. He received his Master Degree of Arts, major in history from the same University in 2004. As Editor-in-Chief of UBC Perspectives Newspaper, the first Chinese-English bilingual student publication in Western Canada, he has initiated a fundraising campaign for the Earthquake disaster in Southern Asia. Professor Martin Dowding from the School of Library, Archival, and Information Study at the University of British Columbia praised Mr. Cho that “he is extremely intelligent, works very hard, and will make an excellent information specialist.”
Ms. Neely Jo-Tung Tang is the recipient of the Huang Tso-ping and Wu Yao-yu Scholarship. She is currently pursuing her Master’s in the Library & Information Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh. She believes that increasing diversity in our profession would make customers, from all backgrounds, more comfortable in using libraries.
In a reference letter, Dr. Toni Carbo, Professor (former Dean) of the school of Information Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh, writes that “Ms. Tang is an exceptional student, who is resourceful, creative, and a person of high integrity.” And “she is an outstanding thinker, who demonstrates very high likelihood of being a real star.” Other honors awarded to Ms. Tang include the 2005-06 Betty Turock Spectrum Scholar-American Library Association. She will be attending the ALA conference this June as University of Pittsburgh’s student-to-staff representative.
Each year, the CALA Scholarship Committee awards four scholarships, up to $2,200, to full-time students enrolled in ALA-accredited LIS programs in the United States and Canada. These scholarships are CALA Scholarship of Library and Information Science, Sheila Suen Lai Scholarship, C.C. Seetoo Conference Travel Scholarship, and Huang Tso-ping and Wu Yao-yu Scholarship. This year, we received many applications from outstanding and well-qualified library students. Choosing only one recipient for each of the CALA Scholarships from many fine applicants was a very difficult task. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the applicants who sent us applications and library professionals who took the time to write wonderful reference letters. CALA was pleased to be able to provide support to these outstanding students in their library professional education through these scholarships. We would like also to encourage those who are not awarded at this time to apply again next year.

2005 CALA Scholarship Recipients

The Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA) is pleased to announce the recipients of the four 2005 CALA scholarships: Ms. Donghua Tao from the University of Missouri, Mr. Zhi Xian Yi at the Texas Woman’s University, Ms. Hairong Zhu at the Kent State University, and Mr. Yang Jin from University of Michigan. The award ceremony will be held on Sunday, June 26, 2005, 7:00 – 10: 00 p.m. at the CALA Annual Awards Banquet, in conjunction with the 2005 ALA Annual Conference to be held in Chicago.
Ms. Donghua Tao, a doctoral student at the University of Missouri’s School of Information Science & Learning Technologies, has won the 2005 CALA Scholarship of Library and Information Science. Ms. Tao earned a MLS degree with specialty in medical librarianship at the same university. She has also concurrently enrolled in a program of Master of Health Informatics. In a reference letter from Dr. Sanda Erdelez, Associate Professor at the School of Information Science and Learning Technology at the University of Missouri, she commends that “Donghua impressed me as very intelligent, articulate, and focused person,” and “she possesses a strong interest in library and information science, especially in understanding how people in the medical community access and use information.” As a promising scholar in the library profession, Ms. Tao has published three articles on peer-reviewed journals. She gave numerous presentations at the conferences held by the Association for Library and Information Science Education (ALISE), Missouri Library Association, and American Medical Informatics Association. She will give a presentation at the 2005 ALA Annual Conference in Chicago. Ms. Tao is a student member of CALA (since 2001), American Medical Information Association, Medical Library Association, American Society for Information Science and Technology, Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society, Special Library Association, and American Library Association. In a reference letter, Professor John Budd, Associate Director of the School of Information Science and Learning Technologies of the University of Missouri, further elaborates that “I believe we have a professional responsibility both to support scholars and professionals of promise and to reward accomplishments. Awarding a scholarship to Ms. Tao would embrace and accomplish both of these responsibilities.”
Mr. Zhi Xian Yi is awarded the Sheila Suen Lai Scholarship. Mr. Yi is currently a doctoral student at the School of Library and Information Studies, Texas Woman’s University. He received a MLS degree from Southern Connecticut State University and M.A. in English from Central South University, Human, China. Professor Sylvia Vardell at the School of Library and Information Studies, Texas Woman’s University, praises that Mr. Yi “is very hard working and conscientious, determined to achieve his goals and make a difference.” Another professor, Dr. Keith Swigger, comments that “Mr. Yi combines intellectual gifts with ambition and energy. His dedication and unceasing efforts to produce the high quality work distinguished him among students.”
Ms. Hairong Zhu is a recipient of the C.C. Seetoo Conference Travel Scholarship. Ms. Zhu is a student at the School of Library and Information Science, Kent State University. Yin Zhang, Associate Professor at the School of Library and Information Science of the Kent State University, praises Ms. Zhu that “she is a very motivated learner and an employee as evidenced by the awards she received for her excellence for her school work and professional work. Recently, she won the 2004 Academic Library Association of Ohio’s minority student scholarship. She is definitely on track for academic and professional achievements.” Ms. Zhu plans to use the fund to attend the 2005 ALA Annual Conference in Chicago.
Mr. Yang Jin is a winner of the Huang Tso-ping and Wu Yao-yu Scholarship. Mr. Jin is now pursuing his Master of Science in Information degree at the University of Michigan, with a specialization in human computer interaction. Xiao-Wen Zou, Academic Advisor of School of Information Science at the University of Michigan, believes in Mr. Jin that “with his solid academic background, years of overseas experience and sustaining self-confidence, I envision that he would have a huge potential for great academic and professional success in the near future.”
Each year, the CALA Scholarship Committee awards four scholarships, up to $2,700, to full-time students enrolled in ALA-accredited LIS programs in North American. These scholarships are CALA Scholarship of Library and Information Science, Sheila Suen Lai Scholarship, C.C. Seetoo Conference Travel Scholarship, and Huang Tso-ping and Wu Yao-yu Scholarship. This year, the CALA Scholarships Committee received a pool of high caliber of applicants. Sha Li Zhang, the CALA Scholarships Committee Chair, credited it to the directors of the ALA accredited library and information science programs and professors in these programs. On behalf of the 2004 Scholarship Committee, we are very pleased to inform you we have selected the recipients for the following CALA scholarships. The criteria for judging applicants are based on their academic excellence, leadership potential, evidence of commitment to a career librarianship and their overall presentation. These CALA scholarships will be presented to the recipients on Sunday night, June 27, 2004, 7:00-10:00 p.m. at the CALA Awards Banquet to be held at the Ming Court, 9188 International Dr., Orlando, FL 32819-8112 during the 2004 ALA Annual Conference.
Sheila Suen Lai Scholarship of Library and Information Science ($500.00) - Iva Seto
Miss Seto has impeccable academic records: first class standing, dean's honor list, and two other scholarships. With a B.S. degree specialize in molecular genetics and also a B.A. degree in comparative literature, Ms. Seto is currently working on her master degree of Library and Information Studies at University of Alberta, Canada. Her career goal is focused on international medical librarianship. She has stated very clearly of her research topic which is in creating standards for Chinese medical information brought into Western databases. Her advisor comments Ms Seto has "strong leadership skills." The whole application packet is well prepared and personal statement is well written. We recommend her without any reservation.
Huang Tso-ping and Wu Yao-yu Scholarship Memorial Fund ($200.00) - Carrie Fang
Miss. Fang received her B.A. degree from Tainjin University, China in 2001. She is expecting to receive her master of arts degree in Information Resources and Library Science from University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ. in December, 2004. She is very active being a faculty-student liaison at her library school, and a member of Strategic Long Range Planning team at the University of Arizona library. She is also actively promoting Chinese culture by being the vice principal of the Tucson Chinese School. It is a privilege to have her as our award recipient.

2003 CALA Scholarship Awards

The Scholarship Committee is pleased to announce the recipients of the C.C. Seetoo Traval Conference Scholarship and the Huang Tso-ping and Wu Yao-yu Scholarship. Ms. Yvonne Cheng has been selected as the recipient of the C.C. Seetoo Conference Travel Scholarship, and Ms. Yu Su has been selected as the recipient of the Huang Tso-ping and Wu Yao-yu Scholarship. We have had very outstanding applications this year, and would like to thank all participants.
Dori Hsiao: recipient of the 2003 C.C. Seetoo/CALA Conference Travel Scholarship
With a BA in English from UC Berkeley, Ms. Hsiao is planning to receive the Masters of Library & Information Science (MLIS) from the Department of Information Studies, UCLA, this June. Her library experience included working at the Harrison Memorial Library in Carmel, California, and volunteering at San Francisco Public Library's Chinatown branch. She also worked at the Walt Disney Imagineering Information Resource Library. Currently, she is an intern at the UCLA Fowler Museum of Cultural History. Her professional focus is primarily with the metadata, thesauri, and digital resources. She is interested in developing innovative and elegant library tools, and providing efficient reference services to support public's needs for joyful learning experience.
Yu Su: recipient of the 2003 Huang Tso-ping and Wu Yao-yu Scholarship
Yu Su is currently a Master's degree candidate at the School of Library Science, University of Arizona. She received her B.A. in Economics from the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing. At the University of Arizona, Yu has worked as the Student Assistant in the East Asian Collection and as a Graduate Research Assistant. She has distinguished herself with several research projects, among them one on "Digital Library of Information Science and Technology," which has been accepted by the International Poster Session at the 2003 ALA/CLA Annual Conference.

2002 CALA Scholarship Awards
The Scholarship Committee is pleased to announce the recipients of the three 2002 CALA scholarships. Ms. Fei Yu has won the Sheila Suen Lai Scholarship of Library and Information Science, Ms. Su Yu the C.C. Seetoo/CALA Conference Travel Scholarship, and Ms. Beverly Anmay Ku the Huang Tso-ping and Wu Yao-yu Scholarship. All three recipients have a record of outstanding academic credentials and accomplishments, and have demonstrated strong potential for future leadership in the profession.
Fei Yu: recipient of the 2002 Sheila Suen Lai Scholarship of Library and Information Science
Holding a Master of Management degree and a B.A. in library science both from Wuhan University, China, she is currently a library and information science Ph.D. student at the University of Pittsburgh. An already established scholar, she has published largely on topics of library science and done researches in such broad areas as digital library, reference services, library human resources, information technology in East Asian libraries, and computer-assisted instruction for distance education. She has also received several awards including the 2000 Outstanding Graduate Student and the 1998 Academic Excellence Graduate Student of Wuhan University over the past years.
In addition, she has varied teaching experiences in China and has been gaining first-hand library service experience by working as a graduate assistant at the University Library System of the University of Pittsburgh. Thrilled by the prospect of the information profession, she will dedicate herself to library management, information communication for cultural diversity, and education of information professionals
Yu Su: recipient of the 2002 C.C. Seetoo/CALA Conference Travel Scholarship
She is presently a MLS degree student with the School of Information Resources and Library Science at the University of Arizona. While taking courses in the School of Information Resources and Library Science, she has worked as a student worker for the East Asian Collection of the University of Arizona and developed strong interest in library research. Her paper “Cultural Issues in Health Information Seeking” has been accepted by the ALA Fifth Annual Diversity Fair, and she will present her research findings at the upcoming ALA Annual Conference in Atlanta. She expects to meet CALA members and many other professionals at ALA and learn from their expertise and experiences.
Prior to studying at the University of Arizona, she obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of International Business and Economics, Beijing, China and worked with a number of business corporations and the Xishuangbanna Library in China. She has received academic awards from both the University of Arizona and the University of International Business and Economics. For instance, the Graduate Tuition Scholarship of the University of Arizona and the Scholarship of “Three Merits Students” of the University of International Business and Economics. Besides her excellent academic pursuits, she has multiple talents in other fields--She won the special award in the fiddle division of the 2nd Beijing Student Art Festival in 1999 and received honorary award for her opera performance in Kunming in 1998.
Beverly Anmay Ku: recipient of the 2002 Huang Tso-ping and Wu Yao-yu Scholarship
She is currently pursuing her Master of Science in Information degree at the School of Information, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Prior to Michigan, she has obtained a MA in Social/Cultural Anthropology from the University of California, San Diego and a BA in Political Science and Psychology from the University of California, Berkeley. A distinguished student and academic achiever, she received several academic honors and awards, including the reputable ALA Spectrum Initiative Scholarship, the Full Tuition General Scholarship from the University of Michigan, and the Public Library Association Travel Grant in March 2002. While she is pursuing her MSI degree, she has been also working in several places at the University of Michigan including the Museum of Anthropology, the Institute of Social Research, and the Government Documents Library. She has helped revamp and update the Museum's web site and prepared research reports on the use of international laws for a political science faculty member.
She has been a member of ALA and APALA (the Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association). Her career goal is public librarianship and aspires to serve the broader society through library services and promote the presence of Asian professionals in the country.
An award ceremony will be held on June 16 at the CALA Annual Awards Banquet in Atlanta. Please take a moment to stop by and introduce yourself to these three CALA scholarship recipients and congratulate them on their academic achievements.

The Sheila Suen Lai Scholarship goes to Amy J. Chow who is currently pursuing her MLIS degree at Dalhousie University in Canada. As a Chinese Canadian, Amy hopes to bring perspective to library profession where diversity is becoming greater concern.
The C. C. Seetoo/CALA Conference Travel Scholarship goes to S. Raymond Wang who is currently in a doctoral study program in information literacy and technology at the University of New York at Albany. Raymond is interested in academic librarianship in the area of web-based instruction and ESL user characteristics. Raymond also expressed an interest in taking on volunteer responsibilities at ALA/CALA.

The purpose of Sally C. Tseng's Professional Development Grant is to support program and research related activities by CALA members. Proposals must focus on program and research in library and information science for which the applicant is highly qualified and which would result in the advancement of the individuals' professional status, knowledge, and contributions to the community. D. FUNDING SOURCE
From Sally C. Tseng Fund donated to CALA that will be awarded to qualified applicant(s) in the amount of $1,000 annually. The grant may be suspended in the case of no qualified applicant or in the case of economic recession that impacts on the Tseng's fund that has been invested in a CALA mutual fund account.
E. FUNDING PERIOD
One year, July-June.
F. NOTIFICATION
The Chair or Co-Chairs of the Sally C. Tseng Professional Development Grant Committee will notify the successful applicant(s) prior to the ALA Annual Conference and the recipient(s) will be announced on the CALA Newsletter and listserv. The Tseng's grant will be awarded at the CALA Awards Banquet during the ALA Annual Conference.
G. REPORT
Successful applicant(s) is/are required to attend CALA Annual Awards Banquet when the Grant will be presented to the recipient(s) during the ALA annual conference. The Tseng’s Grant recepient(s) should submit a written report to the CALA Executive Director and Sally C. Tseng before the next ALA Annual Conference.
H. REFUND
In case the terms of the grant are violated, the Grants will be rescinded and the recipient is required to return the fund in full amount to the Tseng’s Fund Account in CALA.

2005 CALA Scholarship Recipients

The Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA) is pleased to announce the recipients of the four 2005 CALA scholarships: Ms. Donghua Tao from the University of Missouri, Mr. Zhi Xian Yi at the Texas Woman’s University, Ms. Hairong Zhu at the Kent State University, and Mr. Yang Jin from University of Michigan. The award ceremony will be held on Sunday, June 26, 2005, 7:00 – 10: 00 p.m. at the CALA Annual Awards Banquet, in conjunction with the 2005 ALA Annual Conference to be held in Chicago.
Ms. Donghua Tao, a doctoral student at the University of Missouri’s School of Information Science & Learning Technologies, has won the 2005 CALA Scholarship of Library and Information Science. Ms. Tao earned a MLS degree with specialty in medical librarianship at the same university. She has also concurrently enrolled in a program of Master of Health Informatics. In a reference letter from Dr. Sanda Erdelez, Associate Professor at the School of Information Science and Learning Technology at the University of Missouri, she commends that “Donghua impressed me as very intelligent, articulate, and focused person,” and “she possesses a strong interest in library and information science, especially in understanding how people in the medical community access and use information.” As a promising scholar in the library profession, Ms. Tao has published three articles on peer-reviewed journals. She gave numerous presentations at the conferences held by the Association for Library and Information Science Education (ALISE), Missouri Library Association, and American Medical Informatics Association. She will give a presentation at the 2005 ALA Annual Conference in Chicago. Ms. Tao is a student member of CALA (since 2001), American Medical Information Association, Medical Library Association, American Society for Information Science and Technology, Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society, Special Library Association, and American Library Association. In a reference letter, Professor John Budd, Associate Director of the School of Information Science and Learning Technologies of the University of Missouri, further elaborates that “I believe we have a professional responsibility both to support scholars and professionals of promise and to reward accomplishments. Awarding a scholarship to Ms. Tao would embrace and accomplish both of these responsibilities.”
Mr. Zhi Xian Yi is awarded the Sheila Suen Lai Scholarship. Mr. Yi is currently a doctoral student at the School of Library and Information Studies, Texas Woman’s University. He received a MLS degree from Southern Connecticut State University and M.A. in English from Central South University, Human, China. Professor Sylvia Vardell at the School of Library and Information Studies, Texas Woman’s University, praises that Mr. Yi "is very hard working and conscientious, determined to achieve his goals and make a difference." Another professor, Dr. Keith Swigger, comments that "Mr. Yi combines intellectual gifts with ambition and energy. His dedication and unceasing efforts to produce the high quality work distinguished him among students."
Ms. Hairong Zhu is a recipient of the C.C. Seetoo Conference Travel Scholarship. Ms. Zhu is a student at the School of Library and Information Science, Kent State University. Yin Zhang, Associate Professor at the School of Library and Information Science of the Kent State University, praises Ms. Zhu that "she is a very motivated learner and an employee as evidenced by the awards she received for her excellence for her school work and professional work. Recently, she won the 2004 Academic Library Association of Ohio's minority student scholarship. She is definitely on track for academic and professional achievements." Ms. Zhu plans to use the fund to attend the 2005 ALA Annual Conference in Chicago.
Mr. Yang Jin is a winner of the Huang Tso-ping and Wu Yao-yu Scholarship. Mr. Jin is now pursuing his Master of Science in Information degree at the University of Michigan, with a specialization in human computer interaction. Xiao-Wen Zou, Academic Advisor of School of Information Science at the University of Michigan, believes in Mr. Jin that "with his solid academic background, years of overseas experience and sustaining self-confidence, I envision that he would have a huge potential for great academic and professional success in the near future."
Each year, the CALA Scholarship Committee awards four scholarships, up to $2,700, to full-time students enrolled in ALA-accredited LIS programs in North American. These scholarships are CALA Scholarship of Library and Information Science, Sheila Suen Lai Scholarship, C.C. Seetoo Conference Travel Scholarship, and Huang Tso-ping and Wu Yao-yu Scholarship. This year, the CALA Scholarships Committee received a pool of high caliber of applicants. Sha Li Zhang, the CALA Scholarships Committee Chair, credited it to the directors of the ALA accredited library and information science programs and professors in these programs. They encouraged their students to apply the scholarships and took time to write wonderful reference letters for these applicants. CALA was pleased to be able to provide support to these outstanding students in their library professional education through these scholarships.

Sheila Suen Lai Scholarship of Library and Information Science ($500.00) - Iva Seto
Miss Seto has impeccable academic records: first class standing, dean's honor list, and two other scholarships. With a B.S. degree specialize in molecular genetics and also a B.A. degree in comparative literature, Ms. Seto is currently working on her master degree of Library and Information Studies at University of Alberta, Canada. Her career goal is focused on international medical librarianship. She has stated very clearly of her research topic which is in creating standards for Chinese medical information brought into Western databases. Her advisor comments Ms Seto has "strong leadership skills." The whole application packet is well prepared and personal statement is well written. We recommend her without any reservation.
Huang Tso-ping and Wu Yao-yu Scholarship Memorial Fund ($200.00) - Carrie Fang
Miss. Fang received her B.A. degree from Tainjin University, China in 2001. She is expecting to receive her master of arts degree in Information Resources and Library Science from University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ. in December, 2004. She is very active being a faculty-student liaison at her library school, and a member of Strategic Long Range Planning team at the University of Arizona library. She is also actively promoting Chinese culture by being the vice principal of the Tucson Chinese School. It is a privilege to have her as our award recipient.

2002 CALA Scholarship Awards
The Scholarship Committee is pleased to announce the recipients of the three 2002 CALA scholarships. Ms. Fei Yu has won the Sheila Suen Lai Scholarship of Library and Information Science, Ms. Su Yu the C.C. Seetoo/CALA Conference Travel Scholarship, and Ms. Beverly Anmay Ku the Huang Tso-ping and Wu Yao-yu Scholarship. All three recipients have a record of outstanding academic credentials and accomplishments, and have demonstrated strong potential for future leadership in the profession.
Fei Yu: recipient of the 2002 Sheila Suen Lai Scholarship of Library and Information Science
Holding a Master of Management degree and a B.A. in library science both from Wuhan University, China, she is currently a library and information science Ph.D. student at the University of Pittsburgh. An already established scholar, she has published largely on topics of library science and done researches in such broad areas as digital library, reference services, library human resources, information technology in East Asian libraries, and computer-assisted instruction for distance education. She has also received several awards including the 2000 Outstanding Graduate Student and the 1998 Academic Excellence Graduate Student of Wuhan University over the past years.
In addition, she has varied teaching experiences in China and has been gaining first-hand library service experience by working as a graduate assistant at the University Library System of the University of Pittsburgh. Thrilled by the prospect of the information profession, she will dedicate herself to library management, information communication for cultural diversity, and education of information professionals
Yu Su: recipient of the 2002 C.C. Seetoo/CALA Conference Travel Scholarship
She is presently a MLS degree student with the School of Information Resources and Library Science at the University of Arizona. While taking courses in the School of Information Resources and Library Science, she has worked as a student worker for the East Asian Collection of the University of Arizona and developed strong interest in library research. Her paper “Cultural Issues in Health Information Seeking” has been accepted by the ALA Fifth Annual Diversity Fair, and she will present her research findings at the upcoming ALA Annual Conference in Atlanta. She expects to meet CALA members and many other professionals at ALA and learn from their expertise and experiences.
Prior to studying at the University of Arizona, she obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of International Business and Economics, Beijing, China and worked with a number of business corporations and the Xishuangbanna Library in China. She has received academic awards from both the University of Arizona and the University of International Business and Economics. For instance, the Graduate Tuition Scholarship of the University of Arizona and the Scholarship of “Three Merits Students” of the University of International Business and Economics. Besides her excellent academic pursuits, she has multiple talents in other fields--She won the special award in the fiddle division of the 2nd Beijing Student Art Festival in 1999 and received honorary award for her opera performance in Kunming in 1998.
Beverly Anmay Ku: recipient of the 2002 Huang Tso-ping and Wu Yao-yu Scholarship
She is currently pursuing her Master of Science in Information degree at the School of Information, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Prior to Michigan, she has obtained a MA in Social/Cultural Anthropology from the University of California, San Diego and a BA in Political Science and Psychology from the University of California, Berkeley. A distinguished student and academic achiever, she received several academic honors and awards, including the reputable ALA Spectrum Initiative Scholarship, the Full Tuition General Scholarship from the University of Michigan, and the Public Library Association Travel Grant in March 2002. While she is pursuing her MSI degree, she has been also working in several places at the University of Michigan including the Museum of Anthropology, the Institute of Social Research, and the Government Documents Library. She has helped revamp and update the Museum's web site and prepared research reports on the use of international laws for a political science faculty member.
She has been a member of ALA and APALA (the Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association). Her career goal is public librarianship and aspires to serve the broader society through library services and promote the presence of Asian professionals in the country.
An award ceremony will be held on June 16 at the CALA Annual Awards Banquet in Atlanta. Please take a moment to stop by and introduce yourself to these three CALA scholarship recipients and congratulate them on their academic achievements.

The C. C. Seetoo/CALA Conference Travel Scholarship goes to S. Raymond Wang who is currently in a doctoral study program in information literacy and technology at the University of New York at Albany. Raymond is interested in academic librarianship in the area of web-based instruction and ESL user characteristics. Raymond also expressed an interest in taking on volunteer responsibilities at ALA/CALA.

The Chinese American Librarians Association is pleased to announce that Ms. Bin Li is the Year 2000 recipient of the Sheila S. Lai Scholarship, and Ms. Yue Ji the winner of the Year 2000 C.C. Seetoo/CALA Conference Travel Scholarship. The Award Ceremony will be held on July 9, 2000, at the CALA Annual Awards Banquet, in conjunction with the 2000 ALA Annual Conference in Chicago.
Ms. Bin Li, the Sheila S. Lai Scholarship recipient, is a doctoral student of the School of Library and Information Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She was recognized by the Scholarship Committee for her excellent credentials, and her strong potential to make significant contributions to librarianship. Ms. Li holds a B.A. in English, with a minor in Library and Information Science from Beijing Foreign Studies University in China. Prior to her doctoral studies, Ms. Li was a lecturer at the English Program for Information Management Studies at the Beijing Foreign Studies University in China. She was the recipient of the Margaret Ellen Kalp Fellowship in 1999, and the winner of the scholarship from the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia from 1993 to 1995. Ms. Li has a passion for teaching, and is also interested in researching into the widening gap between the info-rich and info-poor. She aspires to help less advantaged groups to better adapt to the changes in information societies.
Ms. Yue Ji, the recipient of the C.C. Seetoo/CALA Conference Travel Scholarship, is a graduate student of the School of Library and Information Science at Louisiana State University. She attended the 1999 ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans, and really appreciated the experience, especially the opportunity to meet many Chinese American librarians. The C.C. Seetoo/CALA Conference Travel Scholarship is awarded to Ms. Ji to partially subsidize her attendance at the ALA Annual Conference in Chicago. As the recipient of the scholarship, Ms. Ji will assist in CALA activities during the annual conference besides attending ALA and CALA programs that interest her. Ms. Ji expressed her desire to be involved with CALA, and was recognized by the Scholarship Committee for her dedication, diligence, resourcefulness, thoughtfulness, and above all, very strong leadership.
Each scholarship carries a cash award of $500. CALA is an affiliate of the American Library Association.

The Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA) is pleased to announce the 2003 C. C. Seetoo Conference Travel Scholarship. As a joint effort between Mr. Seetoo and CALA, the Scholarship awards an amount of US$500 each year to a library school student for his or her attendance of the CALA program at an annual ALA conference. Designed to provide an opportunity for networking and being mentored at the ALA conference, the award is available to all students of Chinese heritage who are currently enrolled in ALA-accredited master's or doctoral programs of Library and Information Science in the higher education institutions in North America. The application deadline is March 15, 2003. The award recipient will be announced in May, 2003, and the award will be presented at the CALA Annual Award Banquet during the 2003 ALA Annual Conference in Toronto.
CALA was founded in 1973. It has now six regional chapters and is a vital affiliate organization of the American Library Association. In addition to sponsoring annual programs, CALA publishes its own Newsletter, Membership Directory, and the Journal of Library and Information Science (in conjunction with the National Taiwan Normal University).

2005 CALA Scholarship Recipients

The Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA) is pleased to announce the recipients of the four 2005 CALA scholarships: Ms. Donghua Tao from the University of Missouri, Mr. Zhi Xian Yi at the Texas Woman’s University, Ms. Hairong Zhu at the Kent State University, and Mr. Yang Jin from University of Michigan. The award ceremony will be held on Sunday, June 26, 2005, 7:00 – 10: 00 p.m. at the CALA Annual Awards Banquet, in conjunction with the 2005 ALA Annual Conference to be held in Chicago.
Ms. Donghua Tao, a doctoral student at the University of Missouri’s School of Information Science & Learning Technologies, has won the 2005 CALA Scholarship of Library and Information Science. Ms. Tao earned a MLS degree with specialty in medical librarianship at the same university. She has also concurrently enrolled in a program of Master of Health Informatics. In a reference letter from Dr. Sanda Erdelez, Associate Professor at the School of Information Science and Learning Technology at the University of Missouri, she commends that “Donghua impressed me as very intelligent, articulate, and focused person,” and “she possesses a strong interest in library and information science, especially in understanding how people in the medical community access and use information.” As a promising scholar in the library profession, Ms. Tao has published three articles on peer-reviewed journals. She gave numerous presentations at the conferences held by the Association for Library and Information Science Education (ALISE), Missouri Library Association, and American Medical Informatics Association. She will give a presentation at the 2005 ALA Annual Conference in Chicago. Ms. Tao is a student member of CALA (since 2001), American Medical Information Association, Medical Library Association, American Society for Information Science and Technology, Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society, Special Library Association, and American Library Association. In a reference letter, Professor John Budd, Associate Director of the School of Information Science and Learning Technologies of the University of Missouri, further elaborates that “I believe we have a professional responsibility both to support scholars and professionals of promise and to reward accomplishments. Awarding a scholarship to Ms. Tao would embrace and accomplish both of these responsibilities.”
Mr. Zhi Xian Yi is awarded the Sheila Suen Lai Scholarship. Mr. Yi is currently a doctoral student at the School of Library and Information Studies, Texas Woman’s University. He received a MLS degree from Southern Connecticut State University and M.A. in English from Central South University, Human, China. Professor Sylvia Vardell at the School of Library and Information Studies, Texas Woman’s University, praises that Mr. Yi "is very hard working and conscientious, determined to achieve his goals and make a difference." Another professor, Dr. Keith Swigger, comments that "Mr. Yi combines intellectual gifts with ambition and energy. His dedication and unceasing efforts to produce the high quality work distinguished him among students."
Ms. Hairong Zhu is a recipient of the C.C. Seetoo Conference Travel Scholarship. Ms. Zhu is a student at the School of Library and Information Science, Kent State University. Yin Zhang, Associate Professor at the School of Library and Information Science of the Kent State University, praises Ms. Zhu that "she is a very motivated learner and an employee as evidenced by the awards she received for her excellence for her school work and professional work. Recently, she won the 2004 Academic Library Association of Ohio's minority student scholarship. She is definitely on track for academic and professional achievements." Ms. Zhu plans to use the fund to attend the 2005 ALA Annual Conference in Chicago.
Mr. Yang Jin is a winner of the Huang Tso-ping and Wu Yao-yu Scholarship. Mr. Jin is now pursuing his Master of Science in Information degree at the University of Michigan, with a specialization in human computer interaction. Xiao-Wen Zou, Academic Advisor of School of Information Science at the University of Michigan, believes in Mr. Jin that "with his solid academic background, years of overseas experience and sustaining self-confidence, I envision that he would have a huge potential for great academic and professional success in the near future."
Each year, the CALA Scholarship Committee awards four scholarships, up to $2,700, to full-time students enrolled in ALA-accredited LIS programs in North American. These scholarships are CALA Scholarship of Library and Information Science, Sheila Suen Lai Scholarship, C.C. Seetoo Conference Travel Scholarship, and Huang Tso-ping and Wu Yao-yu Scholarship. This year, the CALA Scholarships Committee received a pool of high caliber of applicants. Sha Li Zhang, the CALA Scholarships Committee Chair, credited it to the directors of the ALA accredited library and information science programs and professors in these programs. They encouraged their students to apply the scholarships and took time to write wonderful reference letters for these applicants. CALA was pleased to be able to provide support to these outstanding students in their library professional education through these scholarships.

The Scholarship Committee is pleased to announce the recipients of the C.C. Seetoo Traval Conference Scholarship and the Huang Tso-ping and Wu Yao-yu Scholarship. Ms. Dori Hsiao has been selected as the recipient of the C.C. Seetoo Conference Travel Scholarship, and Ms. Yu Su has been selected as the recipient of the Huang Tso-ping and Wu Yao-yu Scholarship. We have had very outstanding applications this year, and would like to thank all participants.
Dori Hsiao: recipient of the 2003 C.C. Seetoo/CALA Conference Travel Scholarship
With a BA in English from UC Berkeley, Ms. Hsiao is planning to receive the Masters of Library & Information Science (MLIS) from the Department of Information Studies, UCLA, this June. Her library experience included working at the Harrison Memorial Library in Carmel, California, and volunteering at San Francisco Public Library's Chinatown branch. She also worked at the Walt Disney Imagineering Information Resource Library. Currently, she is an intern at the UCLA Fowler Museum of Cultural History. Her professional focus is primarily with the metadata, thesauri, and digital resources. She is interested in developing innovative and elegant library tools, and providing efficient reference services to support public's needs for joyful learning experience.
Yu Su: recipient of the 2003 Huang Tso-ping and Wu Yao-yu Scholarship
Yu Su is currently a Master's degree candidate at the School of Library Science, University of Arizona. She received her B.A. in Economics from the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing. At the University of Arizona, Yu has worked as the Student Assistant in the East Asian Collection and as a Graduate Research Assistant. She has distinguished herself with several research projects, among them one on "Digital Library of Information Science and Technology," which has been accepted by the International Poster Session at the 2003 ALA/CLA Annual Conference.

2002 CALA Scholarship Awards
The Scholarship Committee is pleased to announce the recipients of the three 2002 CALA scholarships. Ms. Fei Yu has won the Sheila Suen Lai Scholarship of Library and Information Science, Ms. Su Yu the C.C. Seetoo/CALA Conference Travel Scholarship, and Ms. Beverly Anmay Ku the Huang Tso-ping and Wu Yao-yu Scholarship. All three recipients have a record of outstanding academic credentials and accomplishments, and have demonstrated strong potential for future leadership in the profession.
Fei Yu: recipient of the 2002 Sheila Suen Lai Scholarship of Library and Information Science
Holding a Master of Management degree and a B.A. in library science both from Wuhan University, China, she is currently a library and information science Ph.D. student at the University of Pittsburgh. An already established scholar, she has published largely on topics of library science and done researches in such broad areas as digital library, reference services, library human resources, information technology in East Asian libraries, and computer-assisted instruction for distance education. She has also received several awards including the 2000 Outstanding Graduate Student and the 1998 Academic Excellence Graduate Student of Wuhan University over the past years.
In addition, she has varied teaching experiences in China and has been gaining first-hand library service experience by working as a graduate assistant at the University Library System of the University of Pittsburgh. Thrilled by the prospect of the information profession, she will dedicate herself to library management, information communication for cultural diversity, and education of information professionals
Yu Su: recipient of the 2002 C.C. Seetoo/CALA Conference Travel Scholarship
She is presently a MLS degree student with the School of Information Resources and Library Science at the University of Arizona. While taking courses in the School of Information Resources and Library Science, she has worked as a student worker for the East Asian Collection of the University of Arizona and developed strong interest in library research. Her paper “Cultural Issues in Health Information Seeking” has been accepted by the ALA Fifth Annual Diversity Fair, and she will present her research findings at the upcoming ALA Annual Conference in Atlanta. She expects to meet CALA members and many other professionals at ALA and learn from their expertise and experiences.
Prior to studying at the University of Arizona, she obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of International Business and Economics, Beijing, China and worked with a number of business corporations and the Xishuangbanna Library in China. She has received academic awards from both the University of Arizona and the University of International Business and Economics. For instance, the Graduate Tuition Scholarship of the University of Arizona and the Scholarship of “Three Merits Students” of the University of International Business and Economics. Besides her excellent academic pursuits, she has multiple talents in other fields--She won the special award in the fiddle division of the 2nd Beijing Student Art Festival in 1999 and received honorary award for her opera performance in Kunming in 1998.
Beverly Anmay Ku: recipient of the 2002 Huang Tso-ping and Wu Yao-yu Scholarship
She is currently pursuing her Master of Science in Information degree at the School of Information, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Prior to Michigan, she has obtained a MA in Social/Cultural Anthropology from the University of California, San Diego and a BA in Political Science and Psychology from the University of California, Berkeley. A distinguished student and academic achiever, she received several academic honors and awards, including the reputable ALA Spectrum Initiative Scholarship, the Full Tuition General Scholarship from the University of Michigan, and the Public Library Association Travel Grant in March 2002. While she is pursuing her MSI degree, she has been also working in several places at the University of Michigan including the Museum of Anthropology, the Institute of Social Research, and the Government Documents Library. She has helped revamp and update the Museum's web site and prepared research reports on the use of international laws for a political science faculty member.
She has been a member of ALA and APALA (the Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association). Her career goal is public librarianship and aspires to serve the broader society through library services and promote the presence of Asian professionals in the country.
An award ceremony will be held on June 16 at the CALA Annual Awards Banquet in Atlanta. Please take a moment to stop by and introduce yourself to these three CALA scholarship recipients and congratulate them on their academic achievements.

The Sheila Suen Lai Scholarship goes to Amy J. Chow who is currently pursuing her MLIS degree at Dalhousie University in Canada. As a Chinese Canadian, Amy hopes to bring perspective to library profession where diversity is becoming greater concern.
The C. C. Seetoo/CALA Conference Travel Scholarship goes to S. Raymond Wang who is currently in a doctoral study program in information literacy and technology at the University of New York at Albany. Raymond is interested in academic librarianship in the area of web-based instruction and ESL user characteristics. Raymond also expressed an interest in taking on volunteer responsibilities at ALA/CALA.

Announces Recipients for Sheila S. Lai Scholarship
and C.C. Seetoo/CALA Conference Travel Scholarship
The Chinese American Librarians Association is pleased to announce that Ms. Bin Li is the Year 2000 recipient of the Sheila S. Lai Scholarship, and Ms. Yue Ji the winner of the Year 2000 C.C. Seetoo/CALA Conference Travel Scholarship. The Award Ceremony will be held on July 9, 2000, at the CALA Annual Awards Banquet, in conjunction with the 2000 ALA Annual Conference in Chicago.
Ms. Bin Li, the Sheila S. Lai Scholarship recipient, is a doctoral student of the School of Library and Information Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She was recognized by the Scholarship Committee for her excellent credentials, and her strong potential to make significant contributions to librarianship. Ms. Li holds a B.A. in English, with a minor in Library and Information Science from Beijing Foreign Studies University in China. Prior to her doctoral studies, Ms. Li was a lecturer at the English Program for Information Management Studies at the Beijing Foreign Studies University in China. She was the recipient of the Margaret Ellen Kalp Fellowship in 1999, and the winner of the scholarship from the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia from 1993 to 1995. Ms. Li has a passion for teaching, and is also interested in researching into the widening gap between the info-rich and info-poor. She aspires to help less advantaged groups to better adapt to the changes in information societies.
Ms. Yue Ji, the recipient of the C.C. Seetoo/CALA Conference Travel Scholarship, is a graduate student of the School of Library and Information Science at Louisiana State University. She attended the 1999 ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans, and really appreciated the experience, especially the opportunity to meet many Chinese American librarians. The C.C. Seetoo/CALA Conference Travel Scholarship is awarded to Ms. Ji to partially subsidize her attendance at the ALA Annual Conference in Chicago. As the recipient of the scholarship, Ms. Ji will assist in CALA activities during the annual conference besides attending ALA and CALA programs that interest her. Ms. Ji expressed her desire to be involved with CALA, and was recognized by the Scholarship Committee for her dedication, diligence, resourcefulness, thoughtfulness, and above all, very strong leadership.
Each scholarship carries a cash award of $500. CALA is an affiliate of the American Library Association.

The Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA) is pleased to announce the 2003 CALA's Huang Tso-ping and Wu Yao-yu Scholarship. Established in 2002, CALA's Huang Tso-ping and Wu Yao-yu Scholarship awards US$200 each year to a Library School student of Chinese heritage, who is currently enrolled in an ALA-accredited master's or doctoral program of Library and Information Science in an institution of higher learning in the United States.
The Scholarship is designed to encourage outstanding Library School students of Chinese heritage in the United States. The application deadline is March 15, 2003. The award recipient will be announced in May, 2003, and the award will be presented at the CALA Annual Award Banquet during the 2003 ALA Annual Conference in Toronto. CALA was founded in 1973. It has now six regional chapters and is a vital affiliate organization of the American Library Association. In addition to sponsoring annual programs, CALA publishes its own Newsletter, Membership Directory, and the Journal of Library and Information Science (in conjunction with the National Taiwan Normal University).
The Memorial fund was created to honor both Mr. Huang Tso-ping and Prof. Wu Yao-yu. Mr. Huang was a pioneer in Chinese librarianship and had a career in the publishing trade. Prof. Wu dedicated her life to teaching and writing about classical Chinese literature. The fund is apportioned annually for a period of ten years.

2005 CALA Scholarship Recipients

The Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA) is pleased to announce the recipients of the four 2005 CALA scholarships: Ms. Donghua Tao from the University of Missouri, Mr. Zhi Xian Yi at the Texas Woman’s University, Ms. Hairong Zhu at the Kent State University, and Mr. Yang Jin from University of Michigan. The award ceremony will be held on Sunday, June 26, 2005, 7:00 – 10: 00 p.m. at the CALA Annual Awards Banquet, in conjunction with the 2005 ALA Annual Conference to be held in Chicago.
Ms. Donghua Tao, a doctoral student at the University of Missouri’s School of Information Science & Learning Technologies, has won the 2005 CALA Scholarship of Library and Information Science. Ms. Tao earned a MLS degree with specialty in medical librarianship at the same university. She has also concurrently enrolled in a program of Master of Health Informatics. In a reference letter from Dr. Sanda Erdelez, Associate Professor at the School of Information Science and Learning Technology at the University of Missouri, she commends that “Donghua impressed me as very intelligent, articulate, and focused person,” and “she possesses a strong interest in library and information science, especially in understanding how people in the medical community access and use information.” As a promising scholar in the library profession, Ms. Tao has published three articles on peer-reviewed journals. She gave numerous presentations at the conferences held by the Association for Library and Information Science Education (ALISE), Missouri Library Association, and American Medical Informatics Association. She will give a presentation at the 2005 ALA Annual Conference in Chicago. Ms. Tao is a student member of CALA (since 2001), American Medical Information Association, Medical Library Association, American Society for Information Science and Technology, Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society, Special Library Association, and American Library Association. In a reference letter, Professor John Budd, Associate Director of the School of Information Science and Learning Technologies of the University of Missouri, further elaborates that “I believe we have a professional responsibility both to support scholars and professionals of promise and to reward accomplishments. Awarding a scholarship to Ms. Tao would embrace and accomplish both of these responsibilities.”
Mr. Zhi Xian Yi is awarded the Sheila Suen Lai Scholarship. Mr. Yi is currently a doctoral student at the School of Library and Information Studies, Texas Woman’s University. He received a MLS degree from Southern Connecticut State University and M.A. in English from Central South University, Human, China. Professor Sylvia Vardell at the School of Library and Information Studies, Texas Woman’s University, praises that Mr. Yi "is very hard working and conscientious, determined to achieve his goals and make a difference." Another professor, Dr. Keith Swigger, comments that "Mr. Yi combines intellectual gifts with ambition and energy. His dedication and unceasing efforts to produce the high quality work distinguished him among students."
Ms. Hairong Zhu is a recipient of the C.C. Seetoo Conference Travel Scholarship. Ms. Zhu is a student at the School of Library and Information Science, Kent State University. Yin Zhang, Associate Professor at the School of Library and Information Science of the Kent State University, praises Ms. Zhu that "she is a very motivated learner and an employee as evidenced by the awards she received for her excellence for her school work and professional work. Recently, she won the 2004 Academic Library Association of Ohio's minority student scholarship. She is definitely on track for academic and professional achievements." Ms. Zhu plans to use the fund to attend the 2005 ALA Annual Conference in Chicago.
Mr. Yang Jin is a winner of the Huang Tso-ping and Wu Yao-yu Scholarship. Mr. Jin is now pursuing his Master of Science in Information degree at the University of Michigan, with a specialization in human computer interaction. Xiao-Wen Zou, Academic Advisor of School of Information Science at the University of Michigan, believes in Mr. Jin that "with his solid academic background, years of overseas experience and sustaining self-confidence, I envision that he would have a huge potential for great academic and professional success in the near future."
Each year, the CALA Scholarship Committee awards four scholarships, up to $2,700, to full-time students enrolled in ALA-accredited LIS programs in North American. These scholarships are CALA Scholarship of Library and Information Science, Sheila Suen Lai Scholarship, C.C. Seetoo Conference Travel Scholarship, and Huang Tso-ping and Wu Yao-yu Scholarship. This year, the CALA Scholarships Committee received a pool of high caliber of applicants. Sha Li Zhang, the CALA Scholarships Committee Chair, credited it to the directors of the ALA accredited library and information science programs and professors in these programs. They encouraged their students to apply the scholarships and took time to write wonderful reference letters for these applicants. CALA was pleased to be able to provide support to these outstanding students in their library professional education through these scholarships.

2004 CALA Scholarship Recipients

On behalf of the 2004 Scholarship Committee, we are very pleased to inform you we have selected the recipients for the following CALA scholarships. The criteria for judging applicants are based on their academic excellence, leadership potential, evidence of commitment to a career librarianship and their overall presentation. These CALA scholarships will be presented to the recipients on Sunday night, June 27, 2004, 7:00-10:00 p.m. at the CALA Awards Banquet to be held at the Ming Court, 9188 International Dr., Orlando, FL 32819-8112 during the 2004 ALA Annual Conference.
Sheila Suen Lai Scholarship of Library and Information Science ($500.00) - Iva Seto
Miss Seto has impeccable academic records: first class standing, dean's honor list, and two other scholarships. With a B.S. degree specialize in molecular genetics and also a B.A. degree in comparative literature, Ms. Seto is currently working on her master degree of Library and Information Studies at University of Alberta, Canada. Her career goal is focused on international medical librarianship. She has stated very clearly of her research topic which is in creating standards for Chinese medical information brought into Western databases. Her advisor comments Ms Seto has "strong leadership skills." The whole application packet is well prepared and personal statement is well written. We recommend her without any reservation.
Huang Tso-ping and Wu Yao-yu Scholarship Memorial Fund ($200.00) - Carrie Fang
Miss. Fang received her B.A. degree from Tainjin University, China in 2001. She is expecting to receive her master of arts degree in Information Resources and Library Science from University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ. in December, 2004. She is very active being a faculty-student liaison at her library school, and a member of Strategic Long Range Planning team at the University of Arizona library. She is also actively promoting Chinese culture by being the vice principal of the Tucson Chinese School. It is a privilege to have her as our award recipient.

2003 CALA Scholarship Awards

The Scholarship Committee is pleased to announce the recipients of the C.C. Seetoo Traval Conference Scholarship and the Huang Tso-ping and Wu Yao-yu Scholarship. Ms. Yvonne Cheng has been selected as the recipient of the C.C. Seetoo Conference Travel Scholarship, and Ms. Yu Su has been selected as the recipient of the Huang Tso-ping and Wu Yao-yu Scholarship. We have had very outstanding applications this year, and would like to thank all participants.
Dori Hsiao: recipient of the 2003 C.C. Seetoo/CALA Conference Travel Scholarship
With a BA in English from UC Berkeley, Ms. Hsiao is planning to receive the Masters of Library & Information Science (MLIS) from the Department of Information Studies, UCLA, this June. Her library experience included working at the Harrison Memorial Library in Carmel, California, and volunteering at San Francisco Public Library's Chinatown branch. She also worked at the Walt Disney Imagineering Information Resource Library. Currently, she is an intern at the UCLA Fowler Museum of Cultural History. Her professional focus is primarily with the metadata, thesauri, and digital resources. She is interested in developing innovative and elegant library tools, and providing efficient reference services to support public's needs for joyful learning experience.
Yu Su: recipient of the 2003 Huang Tso-ping and Wu Yao-yu Scholarship
Yu Su is currently a Master's degree candidate at the School of Library Science, University of Arizona. She received her B.A. in Economics from the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing. At the University of Arizona, Yu has worked as the Student Assistant in the East Asian Collection and as a Graduate Research Assistant. She has distinguished herself with several research projects, among them one on "Digital Library of Information Science and Technology," which has been accepted by the International Poster Session at the 2003 ALA/CLA Annual Conference.

2002 CALA Scholarship Awards
The Scholarship Committee is pleased to announce the recipients of the three 2002 CALA scholarships. Ms. Fei Yu has won the Sheila Suen Lai Scholarship of Library and Information Science, Ms. Su Yu the C.C. Seetoo/CALA Conference Travel Scholarship, and Ms. Beverly Anmay Ku the Huang Tso-ping and Wu Yao-yu Scholarship. All three recipients have a record of outstanding academic credentials and accomplishments, and have demonstrated strong potential for future leadership in the profession.
Fei Yu: recipient of the 2002 Sheila Suen Lai Scholarship of Library and Information Science
Holding a Master of Management degree and a B.A. in library science both from Wuhan University, China, she is currently a library and information science Ph.D. student at the University of Pittsburgh. An already established scholar, she has published largely on topics of library science and done researches in such broad areas as digital library, reference services, library human resources, information technology in East Asian libraries, and computer-assisted instruction for distance education. She has also received several awards including the 2000 Outstanding Graduate Student and the 1998 Academic Excellence Graduate Student of Wuhan University over the past years.
In addition, she has varied teaching experiences in China and has been gaining first-hand library service experience by working as a graduate assistant at the University Library System of the University of Pittsburgh. Thrilled by the prospect of the information profession, she will dedicate herself to library management, information communication for cultural diversity, and education of information professionals
Yu Su: recipient of the 2002 C.C. Seetoo/CALA Conference Travel Scholarship
She is presently a MLS degree student with the School of Information Resources and Library Science at the University of Arizona. While taking courses in the School of Information Resources and Library Science, she has worked as a student worker for the East Asian Collection of the University of Arizona and developed strong interest in library research. Her paper “Cultural Issues in Health Information Seeking” has been accepted by the ALA Fifth Annual Diversity Fair, and she will present her research findings at the upcoming ALA Annual Conference in Atlanta. She expects to meet CALA members and many other professionals at ALA and learn from their expertise and experiences.
Prior to studying at the University of Arizona, she obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of International Business and Economics, Beijing, China and worked with a number of business corporations and the Xishuangbanna Library in China. She has received academic awards from both the University of Arizona and the University of International Business and Economics. For instance, the Graduate Tuition Scholarship of the University of Arizona and the Scholarship of “Three Merits Students” of the University of International Business and Economics. Besides her excellent academic pursuits, she has multiple talents in other fields--She won the special award in the fiddle division of the 2nd Beijing Student Art Festival in 1999 and received honorary award for her opera performance in Kunming in 1998.
Beverly Anmay Ku: recipient of the 2002 Huang Tso-ping and Wu Yao-yu Scholarship
She is currently pursuing her Master of Science in Information degree at the School of Information, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Prior to Michigan, she has obtained a MA in Social/Cultural Anthropology from the University of California, San Diego and a BA in Political Science and Psychology from the University of California, Berkeley. A distinguished student and academic achiever, she received several academic honors and awards, including the reputable ALA Spectrum Initiative Scholarship, the Full Tuition General Scholarship from the University of Michigan, and the Public Library Association Travel Grant in March 2002. While she is pursuing her MSI degree, she has been also working in several places at the University of Michigan including the Museum of Anthropology, the Institute of Social Research, and the Government Documents Library. She has helped revamp and update the Museum's web site and prepared research reports on the use of international laws for a political science faculty member.
She has been a member of ALA and APALA (the Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association). Her career goal is public librarianship and aspires to serve the broader society through library services and promote the presence of Asian professionals in the country.
An award ceremony will be held on June 16 at the CALA Annual Awards Banquet in Atlanta. Please take a moment to stop by and introduce yourself to these three CALA scholarship recipients and congratulate them on their academic achievements.
